I used to feel the same way about (Austin) Stevens. However, after posting, on another forum, that "all he was missing was the big shoes, orange wig, and a red ball on his nose" someone who actually knows him opened a dialogue with me and gave me a bit of insight into what it's like for these "personalities." They are constantly pressured and coached to make it more dangerous and reckless...to be more theatrical...to be more of an "entertainer" and less of a teacher. The time that Stevens was bitten by that cobra, in his first show, was a result of first-show jitters and his reaction to their pushing and, as a result, trying too hard.
But aparrently, according to his friend, he is knowledgeable and has a great respect and love for reptiles. He is simply in the position, as with any other trained animal; where he must perform tricks that please his handlers and audience if he wants his reward...that being to keep his job. He said that Stevens is saddened by the insults and opinions of others in the herp community, but the choice is continue to "perform" or lose his job.
Factual or no...it still gave me a bit more insight to their position, and made me a bit more forgiving of their antics.

Brady Barr does not classify as a scientist to me, just some neck that lucked out. I've seen some of the snakes he's messed with on TV and they look so stressed. I know a capture is going to be stressful but just like his personality and his ego, the captures are over-the-top. Like a python that he pulled out of a whole, the damn python looked stretched out and limp. No scientist behavior to me. If you want a specimen, I understand, but sometimes you got to do what's best for the animal and let the damn thing go before you disrupt its ability to survive.

I agree in reference to snakes but he is quite the corocodillian expert I must admit. Its like night and day. I saw a pretty impressive clip of him attempting to capture a huge nile and getting pulled into the water. He didn't even flinch. The crew then roped the jaws and brady got on its back and did a bite pressure test. He was very calm and professional about it and I have heard from many sources that he is a leading expert with crocs.
Ok, enough defending him LOL

Hi guys,
I have watched the short film from the link.
I have to say that the bite looked pretty bad.
I would have probably screemed just as much and would have surely used some vert colorful language if I would have been the one receiving the bite.
All the best,
Alex

Alex, it is good to see you here again !
I was wondering how you have been, since we have not had any posts here from you in quite a while.
Hopy your are doing well, and that your study in Herpetology is going well.
Best Regards JohnZ

Hi John,
I haven't posted in quite a while because most because I spent most of the summer on the field. Afterwords, I spent most of september renovating my apartment. All in all, it wasn't the best summer and fall I had. In the Macin Hills (S-E Romania), in late august, the trip ended with me being bitten by a Vipera ammodytes montandoni. We had to urgently release all the snakes, before we got the chanse to take good pictures, mark them and study them (morphology) and leave the camp site. At least the bite wasn't a very serious one. After about 2 hours of incompetent medical supervision at a local dispensary, I decided I didn't need any medication and left. I just walked around with a swollen arm for about a week.
At the moment, all is good. I recently added some new species to my collection: Varanus exanthematicus, Boa constrictor, Bitis (gabonica) rhinoceros and Macrovipera lebetina.
I'll be posting more often from now one. At least till spring pulls me out of the house again :)
All the best,
Alex
