After having a post removed from kingsnake.com (jags) I thought I would put a mild rant here. I noticed on kingsnake.com in the venomous classifieds a "pastel" southern copperhead going for $2K. What made me laugh was that the snake was nothing but a normal albeit nicely colored southern copperhead and this breeder calls it a "pastel"...are there really that many idiots out there who fall for this stuff? $50K balls, $2k copperheads, what's next?

I think P.T. Barum said " there is a fool born every minute". I caught two Southerns that looked like that a few weeks ago at my brothers' place outside of Dallas and gave them away.

Rob,
I remember years ago we used to unpack snakes and every great once in a while we would run across some oddball patterned animal and get a laugh out of it "geeeze what an ugly king" or "hmmm..that's kind of interesting" but that's about as far as it went...snakes were still snakes then. Now those same animals are "Spiders" Double Mocha-latte'", "Banana/creamsickle-velvet twist" or whatever the hell they want to call them.
But hey, if people want to pay an exorbitant amount of their hard earned cash for these things, who am I to judge. I guess I should have kept hold of those ugly kings in the past eh? Although breeding for morphs and cash has never really been my thing. Give me an old fashioned "snake" any day.

I agree Rob. That is nothing more then a nice copperhead. It is absolutely nothing special at all. I have made a post about that add on another site.
Way too many people slap on ridiculous labels on snakes to try and pass them off as something they are not. If it were Luesistic or something genuinly extravagant then asking a higher price wouldn't be out of the question. People still ask to much for verified morphs but atleast you are getting something unique. Like the leusistic cottonmouths for example.
Another thing that makes this ridiculous is that not only is he trying to pass off an animal that is nothing special for a god awful price but he is also doing it to the venomous community. Though it has expanded exponentially over the past decade or so it is still in the minority as far as the herp trade is concerned. The target audience is much smaller due to the safety aspect.
I guess just trying to find a sucker to by that copperhead is much more important then keeping a good name amungst his peers.
Adios,
Jeremy
P.S There is a viable morph of copperheads out there. I think they are just called abarents. I saw them on display in SC earlier this month. Though those copperheads are something else the vendor had an even more ridiculous price tag on them. I think they were actually asking 7k (Though I may have my numbers wrong. It was in the thousands)I just dont see how anyone would think a venomous herper would pay that. Damn people, stop being so fricken greedy!!

the question to be asked is this: is this an unusual genetic trait that can be proven out by reproducing it?... or is it just an abherant pattern? if it is genetic and desireable the market will make itself based on the availability. if it is somone trying to profit from the ignorance of others... caveat emptor. the copperhead at the columbia show is an awesome naturally occuring and proven pattern morph. they were not priced because they are not for sale. Dalas had the adults and offspring as well. many wanted to buy, but they were not for sale. this is a hobby and many enjoy isolating and reproducing interesting genetic traits. the market will ultimately decide what they are worth. don't confuse a genetic trait w/ an abherant one. abherant can't be reproduced.

I know it was a genetic trait as I saw the display ans saw many ideticle babies. Ive kept snakes long enough to know that you dont get some many offspring that out of the ordinary if it is simply a fluke (non passable trait) I said abbarent because, well, I didnt know what they were being called. Im sorry if my lack of interest in genetics offended you.
As for price, thats what I heard. I didn't even bother inquiring because I knew it would be out of my price range and from what you said it was out of everyones lol
Though it may sounded derogatory I assure you that I wasn't clumping them with the guy trying to sell the pastel. Those copperheads were unique and proven. The gigantic price tag may have floated around the show via hearsay so that I do apoplogize for. Still though, asking over 2k for any venomous or snake period is ridiculous. Just my opinion and im not pointing it at the guy with those copperheads either.

No offense taken. I was just trying to illustrate a salient point in the selective breeding debate.
