Maybe my terminlogy was off, Terry good point. I made mistakes and the only one at fault was myself, again wild animals with individual personalities are impossible to 100% guarentee you wont get bit. I became defensive only over the earlier statements implying "if you get bit, you shouldnt keep hots". I have worked in the exotic animal industry since I was 13, wrking with nonven imports from all over the world until I was 17 and started keeping hots. For the last decade i have been within 50 ft of a venomous reptile (from gloyds cantil to bushmasters and 15 ft kings) for almost all of that time. I have worked in many AZA facilities and was a curator for the largest collection of lanceheads and bushmasters in the states (cape fear serpentarium)and bagged no less than 1000 elapids before I turned 21. The overall point i wanted to make was expect the unexpected, that will help to keep you outta hot HOT water. And for previous posts, most of the guys here know me, have met me and had conversations. I am opinionated, just as opinionated as anyone else on the board. Be careful
Jared

Just for grins I looked up "accident" in Websters New World Dictionary and it states: "event occurring by chance or unintentionally." So from that, a bite is unintentional, therefore accidental. Or a bite resulting from a mistake was unintentional, therefore accidental.Either word would fit. I consider my bite, and always have, a mistake that I made, not an accident.MartyM

just for grins as well ... choosing to use too short of a snake hook or feeding utensil...(or pick any of the circumstances around any mistake/bite)...
Becoming in fact..."intentional"
as in intentionally made a decision that led to a bite.
Thus....mistake not accident....

And what if all equipment is up to par, then is it accidental?

no.
Then it becomes a bad choice/decision or lack of experience.
Bites don't "just" happen.

GAAAWWWWDDDD I knew this was gonna be a hot topic. I've handled a small share of Rattlesnake here in the desert compared to many here. I am fortunate to of never been bitten. I might even be overly cautious who knows. Fact is, I've seen what bites can do from time to time and I really don't want to know its affect on me.... I dont keep any snakes but am fascinated and have done a few dozen removals. I try to learn as much as I can about the natives to my area as to try to educate those around. The possibility of getting bitten is always there. I dont ever think the animal is at fault. It's just doing what snakes do. I had a friend at the memphis zoo years ago. He worked in the Herp house. Last time I was out there I had heard Bobby died. Dont know the cause. Might have been a bite , I dont know. I see here that people that have handled many years here. Some have been tagged. Some are more fortunate.
As far as accident or mistake..... B.F.D. both are just words and either way ,hopefully the lesson was learned.
The scarey thing is , I see 14 year olds come in here with little to no experience wanting to handle Hots.. Or folks that have a hot because it so COOL..
My point being (besides the little fuzzy thing between my shoulders) is educate dont bicker about simantics. Chyt happens I will do my best that it dont happen to me and PRAY that my best is good enough..
I'm done now. can I go home..................Shelby

I don't think Jared and I were arguing symantics. In my opinion the last couple of posts were just good ol fashioned teasing...

I agree with the thinking about being SUPER careful , but how about that unseen snake when you're wandering around outside , or working on something ? I can't really believe anybody is exempt from that kind of thing .

that would have nothing to do with keeping them in a collection though. and also, a little education and care go a long way then as well. to most folks, a 'snakey' area is one that is grown up, tall grass and weeds, etc, but when on a rocky hillside, they aren't as worried. now, most of us know that thick grown up areas are not the best places to find venomous snakes and usually, right out in the open is where they'll be. education in this would go a long way to cut the number of bites from 7 or 8000 to half that or better.
but of course, having no clue where a snake is when you're doing certain outdoor activities is a disadvantage we have to deal with.
