I'm going to Costa Rica in May. I'll be staying on a friend's land located between Dominical and Quepos on the Pacific side. I know there is a reptile zoo in Dominical. Anyone know somebody that gives herp tours in the area. Any tips are appreciated.

Hi Ian, I am not aware of any local doing nature tours but it is always possible. There are some great parks located not too far from you and the standard snake hunting is done by road crusing at night. Just becareful, rocks or fresh limbs placed in the road means there is a vehicle broken down just up the road or around the next corner. Also some locals seem to let their very large cows and bulls out to roam around at night. They are much bigger than a compact car! Also watch for people walking in the road in the most obscure places. Hope you have a great trip. There will be other people out there chasing herps too.

Reptilandia is a very nice reptile park near Dominical. I highly reccomend you go there! They have many, many species of neotropical pitvipers and even a Komodo dragon! The owners are very friendly and are US expats and they were able to ID some snakes I photographed that were not in my field guide. I was there this past summer and was able to get a behind the scenes tour (did I say the owners are friendly). They also do herp tours as well (schedule way ahead). Just beware of the road between Quepos and Dominical, it SUCKS (but it is loads of fun if you have a beater rental 4x4)! Be sure to stop at the bridge over the Rio Tarcoles to see the 16+ foot crocs too!

Thanks for the info. I've been to the area before so I'm aware of the road conditions. They are even worse on the way to to my friends land. I have seen about a 10 foot croc off the bridge/restaurant on the main road which is the same river my friends property is on 7 miles inland. We actually plan to go white water rafting on the same river. It took a couple attemps, but I did get a reply from Reptilandia and they do local tours for 75$ a night.
