I should have just posted this a couple days ago. I was scammed, but in a totally different way. I'm just like the rest of you guys. I've got the b.s. emails about, "what is the final price of your {advert}?" bla bla bla bla. I usually delete them, but this time it was different. Here's how it went down (in the short-condensed version)
i had recieved an email in regards to some of my animals. The email I recieved was from romeobatskennel@yahoo.com. He told me that he was from Hickory, NC. And that he had some retics that he wanted to know if I wanted to trade for. I asked for pics. When I got the email, I thought that the link that was shown was the link for the pics, I clicked it, the screen flashed, and nothing happened. The next morning, I couldnt log into my on line banking. I called the bank, they said that they froze my account because someone hacked in and tried sending all my money to a bank in Texas. I had to close my account, reopen one, get theft protection... all sorts of fun crap. I called the local police. They investigated. They called about 4 days later and said that there is nothing they could do. They tracked the IP address to Croatia! I have since then, seen this guys email on various websites. The scary thing is, he probably has more than just this one email. In fact I know he does. These guys somehow mangage to steal peoples email addresses. Those people may not even know it. EVERYONE needs to be careful. This guy was smart enough that he even had a back up email in case I was able to get back into my account and change my password. He had it set up where as soon as I changed my password, it would email him with the new password. Smart lil' prick isn't he?

Well, it sounds like someone might have hacked Romeos info as well. Romeo Broome is an actuall person here in Sylva, NC, about 25 minutes from me. He isnt from Hickory, NC. He does collect alot of Retics. But Romeos actual email address is romeoskombatkennel@yahoo.com.

yea, that's what I was wondering. Because like I said, the guy had another email address as well that he was using. The cops traced both of the emails and the ones in question both came from Croatia. This is why I didnt at first post on here about the situation, I instead under classifieds put a notice to email me about it. I wondered if it was a real person that got screwed just like I was. The people at wachovia securities told me that these guys have access to alot of peoples email addresses. And the real users have no idea. Either way, it's scary what the pricks can do out there. My down fall was that my anti virus protection had expired, and I kept forgetting to renew it. Had I had protection, this wouldnt have happened. So, moral of the story,.............PROTECT YOURSELVES!

i've been going through this for a year. someone has tried to get car loans, credit cards, computers, etc, in my name. i called experian and with their easy-to-use, voice automated phone number, you can put a lock/alert on your account that forces anyone trying to do a credit check to call you, email you, whatever, FIRST. i had 25+ inquiries into my credit that cost me a bunch of points. to my knowledge no one has gotten anything in my name, but i think someone is only trying to mess with me and not really 'steal my identity'.
1-800-EXPERIAN
it took about 5 minutes and was very simple to do.

also, i quit running any type of anti-virus program since the source of most lag or computer performance issues are directly related to that. if you'll use an email client, there are usually settings to screen for viruses or alert you of suspicious activity.
a good worm/virus will go straight through norton or mcafee anyway. norton will do the same things to a computer that a virus does. i had to wipe my mother's computer once because of norton. they're VERY ineffective and problematic.
like in real life, the 'good guys' are destined to be a step or two behind the 'bad guys'.
