After researching some info on the Rattlesnake roundups in Georgia, I came upon these photos of hunters pouring a "fumy homemade concoction" down a gopher tortoise burrow. Isnt this illegal?

Unfortunatly, not in Georgia. Rattlesnakes are not protected in this state. Gasoline or similar liquids are what are usually poured down the tubes into the gopher tortiose burrows. The gasoline fumes will cause the snake to exit, however, if it detects any movement while leaving the den, it is likely to go back into the den, despite the fumes, and be overcome and die.
The gasoline fumes also can kill slower moving animals like the gopher tortioses, and a multitude of insects and amphibians that use these burrows for shelter.

Johns right, rattlesnakes aren't protected in GA. However the "fumy homemade concoction" might be illegal!LOL I believe most of the GA roundups have been stopped. I think theres still a couple around Claxton though.Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Marty

Marty, you are right, GA still has two of these roundups, one in Claxton and one in Whigham.
Accross the Alabama line, there is still the infamous Opp roundup. The Sweetwater, Texas roundup is probably the largest in the country, and there are still roundups in Oklahoma, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico.
Seems that no matter how enviornmentally awair modern folks become, there will still be pockets of illeterate, red-neck hicks who want to go out and kill large numbers of rattlesnakes.
Boycott Claxton Fruit Cakes until they do away with the Claxton / Evans County roundups. They are one of the largest employers in Claxton, GA.

Its really amazing that Georgia allows this kind of behavior. Besides the Eastern Diamondback, all the other wildlife that use the burrows including the FEDERALY protected Indigo snake falls victim to such negletfull methods.

Yep, however, even though gasoline is supposed to be outlawed in chasing snakes out of burrows, these folks are often working back on timber and private lands, where no one is likely to stop them from using gasoline, which has proven to be one of the most dangerous things to pour into a gopher tortiose burrow.
We are talking about South Georgia redneck hicks after all.
And you know what, the local game warden from DNR is not likely to stop them, as he lives in the same communities, and his kids go to the same schools, and he attends the same church as these red neck snake murdering roundup folks. Would you stop them if you lived there ??? Probably not likely !!!!
It is a bad situation. It needs to be outlawed. Not only in GA, but in Opp Alabama, and in Sweet Water, Texas also, and in Oklahoma and New Mexico......
Best Regards JohnZ
