I started a herp collection around 5 years ago. I had a Boa I got at a herp show, and a Ball python and bearded dragon a frend gave me because he was moving. I had all them about the same time. They would always eat and try and bite me when I cleaned there cages (except for the dragon. He was even temperd) today the Boa (Colombian red tail) died. It started two months ago when I went to feed. The BP NEVER went off feed. It did this time. It would not eat. I tried to feed a cuple days later and the snake would writhe around. It was streight not coiled when it would do this. The next day it was dead. It was kinked up but it did not seem like it had been dead long. A cuple days later I went to tend my Boa. He was always an EAGER feeder. This day he would not eat. a few days later he was aimlesly moving side to side while staying at about a 35 decree angle. A day liter I tried to feed again and the snake would try and move but could not bring its head up off the floor of the inclosure. It could only manage an inchworm type motion, and it was awfel to watch. this went on for two more days, except when it would move, It would do so like when the head is cut off . I had had enough and put the snake down as recomended by the Vet I go to. Normaley this animal would try and bite the crap out of me and this time it just writhes in my hands unable to lift its head or the forward 10 inches of its body. I do have a new addition who lives in a quarentin room. I would feed this fellow and my other snakes on seprate days and wash throughly between feeding. My new snake and first paied for Hot shows no signe of illness. It eats well and is doing fine. The Dragon is getting fat and likes its spot in the living room. I looked in diffrent books and saw that IBD is common among pet store animals. I would like to think that this is what caused my Boids to die. the heat was consistant, the water changed dailey and bowles washed when water was changed. Snake crape removed when it was spotted with some of the sourounding substrate(Aspen shaveings), and I never fed them in there inclosures. I would whipe the glass with a weak viniger/warm water mix and let it dry before they went back in. I know they are not hots, but I am now the owner of a hot and dont want to kill this snake too. Since I wont be putting mu hands on this animal or free handle it is that the reason it has not come down sick or did I some how neglect the other animals ? If you have questions then ask , I wont be offended I just want to be sure that I did not neglect my animals. and I dont want this one to get ill as getting him out to the vet is dangerous and costly. And on top of that, If I cant keep a Boa and alive I am thinking that I may need to rethink my keeping methods.

Sounds like you are a great keeper, just sometimes these things happen. If you change your water every day and other things then you are doing a better job then me and I have many reptiles that have been in my collection for 15 years. Clean everything with part bleach and water and try again..Sorry for your bad luck.

It happens to the best of us. All you can is try again. Clean everything well include the room they were in. When you buy reptile check out your sources and check up on the animals you got. Make a list of things that are going wrong if you notes it. Example food you feed it else.

I think there is some viral diesease, kind of like equivavelnt to human AIDS, that can infect snakes, mostly contrictors and can infect your whoel collection.

Unfortunately, these animals sometimes die for seemingly no reason. I had the same experience with a ball python from a pet store and a milk snake from a breeder several years back. The python refused a meal for the first time in the three months I had had it, and was dead the next morning. The milk snake was somewhat lethargic for about a week before I found it dead. It's very sad, but it does happen. My sympathies.

Sorry for the loss of your reptiles.
While IBD could have been the cause, have you ruled out other potential causes ? Did you make any major change to the caging, or substrates, or food items, or temperatures, or location of the cages ? some of the symptoms sound almost like neurotoxic chemical exposure or somthing similar. Was there any sign of mites on the animals ? I am looking for something that was common to all of the snakes that died.
Best Regards JohnZ

In this case, the veterinarian should have asked the owner if he wanted a necropsy - I would have asked as I would have liked to have ruled out some various causes (IBD, Crypto, paramyxo, etc.). But, we've all been through this and you just need to re-examine things, make sure everything that the animals touched is thoroughly disinfected (if it was bad, I actually toss everything including cages unless they are real expensive).

I cant think of any chemical that would have killed them. No mites, I took a verry good look at them after they were dead. I still have the corps of the boa but not the money or realey the resorces to have it looked into. If some one here wants it they are welcom to it. Cro, no majer changes. I have always used aspen shaveings, and card board or news paper for my quarentined animals. It was suggested that my aspin may have been pine or poisend and that sounds possible. I work with wood. We cut timbers on ocasion and then shipe them to costumers. The night before we ship then we bomb them with poisen th kill beetles and roaches. What ever we cut off we put in a chipper and sell it as wood chips and mulch. I think that maybe my substrate myy have come from a simeler sorce. We clearly marke ours as not for use with food stuffs or animals as we poisen the crap out of it. My Copper head is fine. I still have it on paper and I think I am going to keep it like that for awhile. Forgive my spelling and grammer I am Dog tired and headed for Raton New Mexico tommrow. Oh And my vet is mostley a bird guy. I dont know that he would have the stuff to look at anythong more then the organs. If a snake was killed by poisen would there Liver be damage ?
