I know this is a late response for this post/question, but I felt the need to come back to it.
I fully agree with you John, I think we did come on a little strong and quick to jump the gun on the question.
Although the safety of a ( Beginner ) or anyone is paramount, I went back this morning and went back over the responses, and mine did bother me, hence this one.
I of course agree with John, I would hate to think that we or I ran off or scared off someone wanting to learn about keeping Venomous or non, and made them not want to come back to this site and ask questions. This is by far one of the best if not the "best site on the web", with many people willing to answer questions and help people that are new to the "Snake" world, ether keeping them or just wanting to learn something about them.
I myself am still new to this site as a member and have made what I hope to be "long time friends". I have been keeping hot's since I was only 14 and that was, at least for me, now that I look back, I'm 50 now, too early to start keeping them. I was lucky though, my Mother had the for site and wisdom to let me work with and learn from a man much older, and with many, many years of experience and with the patience to teach and "Educate" this young kid, that was asking a lot of what to him had to be really stupid questions.
All I really wanted to say, is that I for one will try to find out more about the person asking future questions, if I don't know them, and most likely I won't, before I go giving them advise or what could be misconstrued as "jumping on them". I should have known better than to respond so abruptly.
I can only hope that the person ( GaboonViper208 ) will still check out this Great site and ask more questions.
Thanks, Be Safe
Keith

Si, it looks like everyone lost interest in this thread (or pretty much pounded it to death) before anyone got around to answering your question, so I will belatedly do so now. Yes, the initial question that started it all was in regards to the rhinoceros viper (which is Bitis nasicornis), and the gaboon viper, the nominate species of which is the Eastern gaboon (Bitis g. gabonica), while the West African subspecies is B. g. rhinoceros.
