Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" was a favorite of mine also. I can remember the early shows that were in Black and White TV. Man, that was a long time ago !
It was always fun to see Marlin standing there sipping a martini, while Jim was out in the mud wrestling the anaconda, or crocodile, LOL !
Best Regards John Z

Black and White.
I wonder if the young folks here even know what Black and White means ?
Do they know that TV at first did not come in color ?
Do they know that there were only 3 channels to watch, until PBS came along and gave us a fourth channel ?
Just musing.................

John, I'm only 34 and I still remember black and white tv, dial with 13 numbers, rabbit ears and fuzzy picture. I'm sure the very young don't remember, but it wasn't TOO long ago.

BTW....mutual of omaha and the wildlife cards that were sent to you in the mail that you kept in a green, plastic box was what got me interested in hots.
I'm thinking that was about 27 years ago. I also remember library day where most kids would go for the Hardy boys/Nancy Drew books and I was going for books on snakes and ichthyology.....much more interesting and better fodder for beer these days.

Sure, O'Shea is a gentleman in every sense of the word.
And if staging a few shoots enhances interest in Herpetology, then it's for the best. The snakes need all the help they can get!
But to rave against Joe Slowinski, particularly for his drinking and lifestyle, is nonsense.
Unless you're some kind of monk.
Dr. Slowinski lived his life - fully. And to ridicule him for that is in VERY poor taste, and hints of maybe a little envy...
I will agree that 'collecting' any animals to be killed for is a shame, but that's just from my amateur perspective. It's always easy from the sidelines!
Was Slowinski reckless in wrangling venemous snakes by hand? Sure.
But it's a personal choice, like wearing a helmet on the Harley. (And helmets suck!)
Joe knew the risks, as well as anyone. It was his choice.
The book is a good read, but not always factual - cobras "much quicker than vipers"? (P.64) Hardly.
Personally I found botanist Bruce Bartholomew a jerk. How dare he refuse to allow the stressed, overworked ladys that gave mouth-to-mouth resucitation to Dr.Slowinski a chance to view his body at peace, and say goodbye?
And Alan Rabinowitz! What an underhanded crybaby.
Thanks for the opportunity to give my humble opinion.
Cheers, Robert

Wild Kingdom was a Sunday night ritual for me as a kid, and I remember sitting patiently through months and months of zebras, antelopes, pandas, elk and elephants for the once-in-a-blue-moon episode that featured some sort of reptile. The O'Shea-Irwin generation doesn't know how good they've had it. The common attitude of the networks seemed to be that reptiles are unpopular subject matter, and I'm glad that all of these more recent programs have proved that to be untrue. A well-known musician friend once related how he played at some little place for zero crowd, and afterwards the manager said, "Well, I didn't think anyone would come, so I didn't promote it."
My older brother got Jim Fowler to come give a talk at his high school in Winston-Salem way back yonder, at the heighth of Wild Kingdom. He parked his harpy eagle in our backyard while he was in the area, and came to a reception that my parents gave for him at our house after the lecture. I was about 6 or 7 and my mother sent me off to bed while he was still telling his stories in the living room, something I have never quite been able to forgive.

I always wanted to meet Jim Fowler.
He came by the Atlanta Zoo on a weekend that I was off herping, so I missed the chance.
Same thing happened when Roger Coanant dropped by. I did finally get to meet Dr. Conant though, at a Herpetologists League meeting in Kansas. And he signed my "Conant" book !
Best Regards
