Celeste, here's a tip with your messy timbers (canes). After consulting my feeding/defecation records, as well as observing the size of the "pregnant" bulge that starts developing in the intestinal region just prior to evacuation, I have taken to moving them temporarily into a bare sterilite container for a few days until the business is accomplished. Then, the snake can be given a bath and returned to its nice clean cage, and the sterilite can easily be washed out. Saves a lot of hassle, and bedding.

I used to use just cypres mulch for substrate. But I've changed to a mix of 50/50 potting soil,(no added fertilizer)and peat moss, and I throw in a little cypres mulch and oak leaves. The poop just clumps in the dirt and can be scooped easilly. The peat moss keeps it a little "fluffy" so it doesn't pack down solid and helps hold a little moisture.Nope, never had a problem with a snake swallowing any, like with other substrates, no chunks.(I knew someone would ask)Marty
