A bit about the SHHS Profile issue.
For the time being, the sign up sheet states:
Use the form below to become a VenomousReptiles.org member. We only require you to enter a Nick Name, password, and email address, but we recommend you fill in suggested fields too. Any information you enter here is strictly confidential and will not be sold or distributed to any other entity.
This will change fairly soon, when the code for the site is updated. But, for now, Profiles are encouraged but not required.
I know that many of you like to know who you are talking with on the forums, and like to know their past experience dealing with venomous reptiles before you answer their questions.
So, when a new member shows up, and asks questions, please ask them nicely to fill in the profile, so that we may better be able to answer their question. Do not tell them that it is required.
You do not have to answer the peoples questions if they do not fill in their profiles. As far as general questions, it should be fine to answer them. However, for questions that involve deadly animals, it might be best to not answer the folks until you know a bit more about their experience level.
As far as the Classifieds Adds, a Profile and EMail address ARE REQUIRED, as this allows us to ban folks who post scammer ads. We have greatly reduced those types of ads since we started requiring this. Many site managers will write those posting the adds and tell them about the new policy. Other site managers will just delete adds that do not have this information, as the new policy has been in effect for many months now, and most members should know about it by now.
Hope this clears a few things up.
Best Regards John Z

John, I mentioned in another thread that I thought it would be a good idea to have some nominal dues for membership, but I wasn't too clear... what I meant was, perhaps there should be different levels of involvement open to those who might want to become more involved, while still keeping the site open to anyone with a casual question. In other words, perhaps it should be more along the lines of anyone can ask a question, but only qualified members can answer it.
Perhaps the core group here could come up with some sort of criteria to evaluate whether certain members are indeed qualified to be "experts" and come up with something that designates them as such when they make a post. Then, say a school teacher asking a question who may not want to be actively involved with venomous snakes or the site over the long term, can be assured that his or her question is being answered by someone who knows what they are talking about.
There could be other levels as well... novice, apprentice or intermediate, based on years of experience, employment at a zoo or other institution, species kept, etc.
I do think the site should be known as a resource for lay people too, who just want to have a question properly answered. Of course, with husbandry, etc. questions, we do need to know what the person's age or experience level is, but anyone interested in keeping venomous snakes should be willing to fill in a profile and become a member here.
