Asking for compensation for your travel is not the same as charging a fee for your time and expertise. It is reimbursement for real monies lost by you. To be fair the person providing the service should make the request before they hang up the phone. If the person reneges and fails to make the donation, at least you found a new place to release future snakes!!!! (absolutely tongue-in-cheek)

Yep, I would not charge a fee for time and expertise, only for out of pocket expenses like gas.
However, if you are doing something besides a snake rescue, like giving an educational talk, then charging some for time and expertise does come into play.
I never charged Scout Troops or 4H Clubs or Schools to give lectures about snakes. However, when folks like GA Power wanted a talk to educate their field workers about venomous snakes, I did charge for that, and they gladly paid.

BE CAREFUL! Particularly careful if you bring your own materials or animals. I agree with being paid for shows or lectures. And, as I said previously, for removing snakes if you do it on pre-agreed terms. But always make sure you are indemnified and have your assets protected. If some one gets hurt you can be held liable, professional or not. I hate to be this way, but in today’s litigious world you have to cover your bases no matter who the group is. Get a lawyer, or do your own research on indemnity clauses and contracts. It’s good if you can get them to say (in writing) that you will not be held responsible. It’s better if you can get them to agree to accept all responsibilities. That way they have no one to blame but themselves. Different states allow for different degrees of indemnity, but (as far as I know) nowhere will you be covered for gross negligence. So again, be careful. I really hate to be so pragmatic. It takes a lot of the fun and satisfaction out of doing things like this. But a civil suit can be just as debilitating as a criminal charge.
If it gets to the point where you’re actually bringing in some serious money, or are in high demand, consider insurance and incorporation in addition to the indemnity contracts. Nobody like lawyers – until you need one!

Making money from someone elses fears sounds to me like extreme dirtbaggery. I am curious as to who the expert was. C'mon Karl, gives us a hint!

Todd, I am curious also. I am trying to figgure out who the local "snakeman" is that lives in South Georgia or North Florida, and who has been on National TV. Right off, I can not think of anyone.
The idea that someone would wind up with a Habu in a car in the US is just wierd. Just how many feral Habu are there running around in this country, anyway, LOL !

I agree, that car was probably made and assembled in the US, just like many foreign cars are nowadays.
He probably thought, Japanese car, Japanese snake. Who at the dealership or any non reptile people would question that?....once again, he's brilliant in his ploy. He probably got the idea from scorpions and spiders being found in bananas at grocery stores.

Also, I would think an exotic venomous snake found in a foriegn car would tend to make national headlines.

He is North Florida but I think it would be unethical for me to name him here without inviting him to rebut my post.
Many here know him or know of him.
You can email me and I will reply but I don't feel the need to go into all the things he does wrong on this site.

I understand Karl. If however, it's the person I'm thinking of, he won't come up in this humpty bumpty. It'd be the intelectual equivalent of bringing rubberband shooter to a gun fight!
