Jim Harrison has been working venomous snakes for a great long time. He works hundreds of snakes "hands on" weekly. If Jim is comfortable doing something a certain way, well-that's his thing. He's no fool and understands the consequences better than most. I have worked snakes along-side of Jim and never once felt anything less then secure. It's easy to look at a seasoned professional and misinterpret "comfortable" with "over-confidence". It's a fine line, but one that should never be attempted unless one has been working venomous on a large scale for an appreciable number of years.
Everyone had their own "style" that they are comfortable with, you have to. The key is never taking unnecessary risks and always doing your handling in the best interest of the animal's and your own safety.
This has been a public service message.
Take care all.

"also its not like i am letting the snakes crawl all on the floor, when i am barefoot, and for antivenom i have my own small frigde for the serum, so stop pointing at small issues like caging, i have alot of money i can aford cages, its just i hate visions, i bet if some of you put up a video, you probaly have horrible caging, also some of you probaly keep snakes in your bedroom, with clothes and cans cluttering the floor, am i right, so think about it, arin"
Arin, please. Everytime another member gives you constructive criticism, you act predictably like a 16 year old should. These are my major concerns below. I'm by no means against younger keepers, as I got my first Northern Copperhead when I was just about 18.
1. What dealer in their right mind would sell a 16yr old kid a Malayan Krait and all the other snakes you have??! That's mind blowing. You said you keep antivenom right? Well, do you have CSL Tiger snake AV? That's the AV that will nuetralize a bite from one of these. I doubt you do, quit bullshiting.
2. Your comments about affording cages and proper space to house them. Why on earth would you even go there? To me, and probably others...you keep your snakes in a walk in closet! You can barely even move in there judging by the looks from your videos. Well if you can afford cages, buy some. Visions are the best (IMHO). Using the excuse about the lip where the snake can hide is usesless. If a person is that ignorant in sticking their hand in a cage before they see the snake..well, they shouldn't keep venomous! If you don't like Visions, try Animal Plastics or Precision Caging.
3. Cut the video crap. Nobody wants to see a nice looking snake in a plastic bin cluttered. It's just like the people that take horrible photos of a snake and post it up. Why post a shitty photo or make a horrible video? My advice is a make a photo/video set where you can do this. Trust me, it will be much better on a persons eyes. Any yahoo can film snakes bin by bin. The YouTube craze with venomous snakes is old now.

Honestly I do use Plastic conatiners, sterlite, rubbermaid etc. I will not however use anything thats not see threw, or does not provide at least some sort of room for the snake if i can help it. Crampt quarters to me is just asking for a bite to me so I rarely use anything tiny less its absolutely nessicary. that goes for any enclosure I use weither its tote, tank, or custom.
An while my snake rooms are tiny their not clostrophobic tiny.. Theres no way I could keep what your keeping in such a tiny space without constantly worrying about whats behind me if i had to step back.
As for teh barefoot thing, yea I'm guilty to I have to admit more then once in the summer i got cought barefoot back in my snake room an I took a lil heat for it from some poeple whom I consider good friends an great keepers ;).
An I am sure anyone whos watched my videos can go threw an probly pick out all the lil things I do wrong or my snake room being cluttered. Oddly enough its a mess every time my camera comes on haha I realy should keep it back there an get video when its straightend up haha.
but any way my poin is that its easy to develop bad habbits, but hard to correct them with good ones when your used to doing things a certain way. Its so easy to do things the way we want rather then the way we should.
Take the advice given by these guys with a grain of salt hun an look at it as they would as seasoned keepers. Your welfare as well as your snakes welfare is what they are looking out for. You have some verry nice looking animals in your collection why not honor their beauty an abbility an place them in enclosures that are more suiting for them so that you can beter care for them, an video them safely.
There are alota caging options out there even if you don't like Vision, there Boaphile, herpcage.com (which i use for some), precision, etc. Or if your good at building make some custom cages to suit what your housing. I've recently started looking at more professional caging methods myself more for my animals well being then anything espiclay since I like to set up natural looking enclosures, an totes just don't allow for that.
oh before i forget, why not take a drill an put 2 holes in your hide, an thread Zip ties threw an leave them looped just enough that you can use your hook to safely remove your hides an replace them.
We are all human, we all make mistakes. What matters is if you learn from them or not.

i was not talking about jim harrison, keeping venomous in sterilite, go on his youtube page and the video that pops up, well, watch it, he is barefoot, and for my youtube replies sounding horrible i do not care, and for the a/v i do not have the tiger snake a/v yet but i know it works quite well on krait bites, also if you want something to bitch about go watch omertalover on youtube, as you see i dont like to go in to alot of detail, i say what needs to be said, also all of you act like i just got into venomous keeping, well thats not the case, arin

Each time you respond, you show your age. Stop worrying about what other people are doing and concentrate on your own issues. Jim may indeed be shoeless at times but keep in mind he has been bitten if I'm not mistaken. Not to mention he is a bit more experienced in working with snakes than you are. I have only been keeping hots for around 4 years and I consider myself as a beginner. I consider any constructive criticism I can from those who care to offer it to me. Whether you like to believe it or not, there are people who are smarter than you. I may not be one of them but I dont put my ego ahead of taking care of myself or my snakes. Keeping adult Rhinos, Kraits, and Cobras in little tupperware boxes inside a closet sized room is simply bad decision making no matter what kind of excuses you'd like to make. Putting the danger of working with the snakes under those conditions aside, please consider that the animals you are caring for deserve better conditions. The techniques and housing you show are flawed, plain and simple. ~Bill

Arin, again your arguement and justifications show your age and immaturity. Plastic bins are good for neonates and juveniles, but your whole collection is housed in plastic bins that are mainly used to put left over food in, not highly venomous snakes.
1. Show proof if you have antivenin, since you keep making these lofty claims. If you can afford a couple thousand dollars for AV, you can get some good cages. I'd also like to know the dealers that sell to a sixteen year old. I can then scratch them off the list on where I buy snakes from. Can you imagine the headlines if an accident were to happen Godforbid?
2. For instance, you tried feeding your adult Echis crickets? Adults will eat mice or lizards, only babies readily take crickets.
3. People are trying to help you out. Bill (FishMich) has been around the boards for a while. He always makes logical and reasonable posts and he's a young guy. Nobody is bashing you! But when you put videos on YouTube, be prepared for cricticism, especially when your videotaping venomous snakes. Everytime someone questions you, you pull the "poor me, everyone's bashing me". That's nonsense.
