You know I can't resist an opportunity to make a personal comment about classifieds, so here goes.... I just read Spanky's classified for an Eastern Diamondback, canebrake and cottonmouth for sale or for trade. The part that caught my eye was the part where he admits to "freehandling" the canebrake. If I recall correctly, this is the guy who has been bitten by most of the snakes that live in his part of the country, who "waits it out" before going to the hospital for a cottonmouth bite and who has been asking questions about venom affects on heart valves and self immunization.... No we have an open admission of free-handing a canebrake. I hope it isn't a Dorchester County, South Carolina Canebrake.
I don't really care what you (Spanky) do in the privacy of your home, within limits, but broadcasting to the world that you engage in a behavior that I find to be quite insane, crosses the line of good sense.
Remember, children read this site..... here's a link so you don't think I made it up:

Tom T. I do not care what you think. Yes I do free handle the cane, now and then. Your trouble is you just don't have a life. and you must not know how to handle venomous snakes, Or your life is just dall. Yes, I have took some bites, and I know more about bites than you will ever know. And yes, I do self immunization. Using EDB, cane, and cotton. And the shot I take once a week, would put you in the hospital. I have been taking this shot for almost a year now. the resson is I can't have antivenin anymore. as far as kidds seeing my add about me handling the cane, (well) I see that stuff on tv all the time. Good day Tom T.

Brief comment here: Spanky, if you've taken all of these bites maybe it's YOU who don't know how to handle venomous snakes?!?!
Personally, I take a descent amount of pride in the fact that, other than protocols, I don't know anything about bites...other than the fact that I don't want one.
Unfortunately, what you do in the privacy of your own home CAN affect all of us...more bites=more restrictions (legislation), assuming the bites get media attention.

What do I think, well I think that no matter how many times Chris and Karl ask you guys to keep your personal opinions to yourself, you just keep on getting something started. Lets all not worry about each others ways and just enjoy this site. If you have a problem with someone or something, then E-Mail them. Don't put it out there for us to have to endure on a weekly basis. Just like in true life, everyone has something that bothers us all, but we are all human not perfect. GOD BLESS AND BE SAFE!

I seen the add and was not going to say anything because there is alot of fighting among keepers anymore when we should be fighting those trying to take our animals away instead of each other. We all have different ways of keeping them and as long as they are safe methods for us and the animals I find nothing wrong but free handing a canebrake is not a good practice but it is spanky at risk not me I just think we should keep things like that to ourselves so new keepers dont get the wrong idea. so I would say I agree with Tom T and Biff but spanky is a good guy also he just takes more chances than he should I guess. Just my opinion dont take it as a slam!

"bob" i HAVE E-MAILED YOU A LOT, wOULD YOU PLEASE E-MAIL ME. ( BY THE WAY ROBERT kIRK IS A FRIEND OF MINE.)As far as the free handling the cane maybe it was wrong. I was not trying to put out any bad info for kids. It is just that I see so much of it on TV, and shows, that I did not see anything wrong with trying to tell everyone how easy the cane was to handle. I forgot you can't say anything here with out taking slack. (AGAIN I AM SORRY )SPANKY

Quote from Greasemonkey
"We all have different ways of keeping them and as long as they are safe methods for us and the animals I find nothing wrong but free handing a canebrake is not a good practice but it is spanky at risk not me I just think we should keep things like that to ourselves so new keepers dont get the wrong idea."
The problem is that freehandling IS NOT safe for the person nor the animal involved. The reprocussions to the individual are pretty obvious but let's consider the snake. I would think that if a bite were to happen the immediate response would be to drop it. I personally feel that a drop from more than a few feet could cause harm to the animal and along with it unnecessary stress.
The goal we should strive to meet when we choose to keep these animals is to provide them with a stress free enviroment which includes minimal interraction with the animals because of their very nature.
The idea that we should keep our thoughts on freehandling to ourselves borders on ridiculous! If by chance a person new to keeping venomous should read about someone practicing this dangerous technique they may assume all to easily that it is accepted and standard practice. Or if the visitor in question has some working knowlege of reptiles they could easily assume that SHHP as a whole condones this sort of unsafe technique. For this very reason it should be considered essential to point out reckless behaviors when they are posted on a public forum.
Let's face it if you are looking for a pet reptile to interact with both you and the animals involved would be better served by you limiting yourself to working with nonvenomous.
Just my humble opinion
