Wondering if there is a simple way to tell Naja annulifera and anchietae apart. In the banded forms I believe that in annulifera the dark bands are wider and in anchietae the light bands are wider. Is this correct? Is it almost always true?
Thanks

In "Snakes of Zambia" it says that for Naja annulifera the yellow bands are usually half the width of the black bands, but in Naja anchietae the yellow bands are usually as wide or wider than the black bands. I'm not sure if that is really accurate. I have a pair of Naja annulifera and my male has wide yellow bands, but the female has relatively narrow yellow bands. She's also considerably smaller than he is, and they are the same age, but they are both definitely Naja annulifera. From what I've read, Naja anchietae usually stays a little smaller than annulifera.
I think the only way that you're going to be able to tell is to just do the scale counts.
Hope this helps,
-Jamie

I have seen very large (7ft) N. anchietae.
N. anchietae have 17 midbody scale rows and N. annulifera have 19 and therfore N. anchietae appear to have bigger scales, especially around the neck region which looks almost knobbly in comparison to N. annulifera.
Hope that helps
