Going on my first back packing trip this year to Middle Prong Wilderness in NC. From the pictures of some of the streams there and the some what strick camping rules that apply to the area, this should be prime Hellbender territory I'm hoping. It would also be nice if the sun brought out some Timbers, black rats, water snakes, or copperheads. Anyone familiar with the area or have any tips in locating Hellbenders so that I may give my new camera a work out?

Hellbenders like fast-moving water in larger, cold mountain rivers, and are not at all easy to find or catch. They are incredibly slimy and almost impossible to hold onto. Ask local fisherman if you have a chance, as they are often caught on hooks. Old time fisherman have traditionally thought of them as being highly toxic, and would usually cut the line rather than try to take them off hook. Also, check the location of Middle Prong Wilderness (which I'm not familiar with) against a good range map to make sure hellbenders are in that area (if you haven't already done so). Good luck - they are one really cool caudate.

Thanks, through google I have found that scientist have done regular studies in the area and have found healthy populations. The area is past Brevard and just south/attached to Shining Rock wilderness. Its on the southern state border. Hopefully it won't rain all weekend.
