would it be possible for the local effects of vipers for example to be negated by self immunization? or would the immunity only be able to prevent systemic failures, whilst the local effects are still in effect?

The effects can be greatly reduced but not eliminated completely. It will always swell around the injection site.

Couple of points- naja naja is extremely necrotic as well as neurotoxic, as are most cobra venoms. Basically, the very hemotoxic venoms are not as neurotoxic as the naja venoms. It is very potent, don’t think of more or less, what you think is less is very bad stuff. The ‘second link’ on the web link is a paper on the Army experimental immunization of one man, Hershel Flowers, not 40 people. That’s my web site, enjoy the links. I encourage everyone with an interest to see the published papers on the subject from clinical trials to cut through the incorrect information out there. I’m on eight years and about a hundred injections. Mostly started copying the earlier works of these human trials but just ongoing for years, which is somewhat unknown territory except for Bill Haast who immunized for sixty plus years. You can become extremely resistant to the hemolytic effect of water moccasin venom, for example. It might take a lot longer than these published trials which in some cases were just twenty injections or less and a few months long. After a few years, you stop turning color from them. Just my personal observation. I don’t believe you could ever be immune to the bite from a large Russels viper, Fer de Lance or Gaboon. But I would bet it couldn’t hurt to have circulating antivenom to act instantly to minimize the effects. You could be resistant enough for a lower yield (smaller snake) from any snake to maybe claim immunity fairly quickly. And relative immunity to neurotoxic venoms, even large tiger snakes, mambas, kraits, etc. is doable and proven. I believe a drug could be developed from my resistance to help heal deep tissue trauma and bruising much faster. It isn’t insane, etc, which is the accusation I took offense to, in the one poster’s objection to this practice. You can email me if you want but I’m not going to go on forever in this thread.

Why is the idea of injecting snake venom so taboo? Just curious why people are so emotional about the topic? Is it the idea of self experimentation in the medical age? I believe every human has the right to do what they want with their body regardless of education or affiliation. Autonomy is one of the primary principles of medicine. People have the right to decide what to do with their body. It is the physician's responsibility to obtain informed consent when treating his patients not to judge. Our society is so behind the ball when it comes to end of life issues or other taboo subjects. Dr. Kervorkian respected his Pt's wishes. He helped his suffering Pt's end their life with the application of evidence based medicine. "To do no harm" is part of the hipocratic oath that medical providers take. Why is it interpretated to be ok to not provide the ultimate relief, death? To do nothing is to facilitate suffering but to do something is a criminal offence. Why is it against the law for humans to let their animals suffer but ok, and even expected to let another human suffer before eventually dieing to diease? Since when did it become socially acceptable for the certain few to say what is right or wrong? People are going to experiment with self injection. Why does society choose to judge those who go against the grain? Why is it so taboo to provide assistance to those few who want to do things their own way but don't have the means to do so? If someone wants to shoot up snake venom why does it become a criminal act to help them? Just some things to think about. Our governments role is not that of a parent. To punish a child for doing things his own way instead of looking for the positive in any situation is just absurd.
