They come to the house and see the Nile puffer fish and say "why ain't it puffin" I explain that when they do that it is a last ditch defence effort and that it is a bad thing that they can die from. Then they always ask "Can I see your rattle snake" I say "sure" and they say "Why ain't it rattlin" I say that "they do that to let you know that it is not happy and that the activity continues that something bad is going to happen". They then as "Will you throw a mouse in there so I can watch it eat"? I say "Hell no". Then they see my Pit Bull and advise me of how dangerous they are, that they have a bite strength of 2,000 pounds and that my dog will just snap one day. I get annoyed by the stupid rednecks but I love them as they are my friends. It just makes it hard to believe that people can be educated about thees animals and convinced that they can be kept safely. Ah, sigh. I will keep trying. Now I must go scoop snake crap. Good day all.

No. He is small and black. He never had his ears done and mostly sleeps and eats and farts. The snake spends most of its time coiled on its rock waiting for his f/t mouse. The fish does the same except he waits for snails and ghost shrimp. Thees guys are cool and but can be a pain in the butt. There children are better to deal with.

I know exactly what you mean... Just last night a friend of mine was telling me about this show he saw on Burmese pythons. He tells me: "They're poisonous and they also crush you to death."
The only thing you can do is tell them politely that they got their facts wrong and move on...

My stock answer when someone asks at the refuge if they can see me feed a snake (or ask if I'm going to feed the snakes soon) is to say "I don't have any mice thawed out right now". That either satisfies them or leads into a useful discussion, without having to smack them...

I usually tell them to run to the pet store and pick up a dozen rats and a couple dozen mice and I'll let you watch em all eat. So far nobody has taken me up on it. I'll keep trying though, a free meal for all of them would be nice.

I gave a talk last week at a summer camp about reptiles. The question that gets on my nerves is, "Why don't you put the snakes on the ground and let them fight?".

agkistrodude thats not a bad idea. there is a pet store near me that has a few younger alligators and they have a sign that says you can buy a rat to feed the gators so the people pay to feed the gators for the store.
