A package packing a poisonous bite turned up Thursday night in Pinellas Park.
Pinellas Park, Florida (WTSP) - A package packing a poisonous bite turned up Thursday night in Pinellas Park.
It was being shipped from Virginia to a Vero Beach school, but ended up at a UPS processing center in Pinellas Park.
The man who ordered it called UPS, and said his snake was never delivered. The package was not marked 'Live Animal.' UPS does not ship snakes.
UPS called the state, and the state called Vernon Yates the owner of Wildlife Rescue and Rehab.
He opened the box to find a baby Cobra.
Yates said, "what bothers me is its being shipped to a school. somebody at school could have opened this thing and not known what it is. Someone with a weak immune system, could have resulted in someones death."
Yates says it is not illegal to ship a snake, but the way this snake was shipped violates several animal and shipping regulations.

We do not need new laws!
Why aren't we enforcing the ones we have?
Why isn't the shipper in jail for violating shipping regulations?
Why isn't the buyer in jail for having it shipped to a school?
Instead of enforcing the laws that exist, we will just make new ones for people to ignore.
What a waste!

I'm guessing this isn't the first time the shipper has done this! Wondering if the Delta Dash charges that keep going up also play a roll.
The shipper, (Not sure if he has friends here) screwed up and should be punished. It only hurts us all and we pay for these types of bonehead mistakes in the end! I'm more understanding if it was non-venomous but when it comes to something that can kill someone, don't be a cheap idiot! I worked freight and boxes do rip open, smashed or whatever on accident (That's why insurance is available) This story has a happier ending VS the title being, "Postal Worker Bit by Cobra".
DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!

It was NOT a cobra if the picture was accurate.
It was a False Water Cobra.

UPS does ship live non-venomous snakes. That is the shipper that "Ship Your Reptiles" has a contract with for shipping reptiles. I know because I just shipped a kingsnake through them. It was marked live harmless reptiles on the sides of the box.

Real cobra or false water cobra, it makes a difference in degree of idiocy but doesn’t negate the foolishness. Granted that the false water cobra is not considered a venomous or dangerous snake by some authorities having jurisdiction. The fact is that it does possess venom and it does have a delivery apparatus. That the bites can be trivial doesn’t change the possibility that the bite could also do a great deal of damage.
Sending it UPS was splitting hairs and thoughtless, at best. I don’t know what kind of school this animal was being sent to. But, if it was a grade school, with kids running around, this act was absolutely inexcusable. With this avocation imperiled, any real or perceived transgression brings the end that much closer. We all have to keep our noses cleaner than clean and censure those that don’t.
