Snake freak lives with 40 deadly snakes
Swart was biten three times on the right arm by a puffadder on Friday night, confirmed Chameleon Village Reptile and Conservation Park director David Dennis.
"After surviving three bites, the risk is a little bit too much," said Dennis.
Swart walked into the snake enclosure near Hartbeestport Dam on 15 August last year but was biten by a puffadder just six days later. He spent 27 days in hospital.
"I then started over on 23-10-2009 knowing that I must be more careful, but then I got biten again on the 27-12-2009 by a snouted cobra on the same foot that the puffadder bit me," wrote Swart on his website.
On Friday night, Swart was biten by a puffadder while watching a DVD. Dennis said fortunately the snake was smaller than the puffadder which bit him last year. He said he hoped that Swart would be discharged from hospital today.

Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- A South African man attempting to break a world record by living for more than 121 days in an enclosure with venomous snakes has quit after being attacked for a third time on Jan. 22, The Times said, citing David Dennis, the director of Chameleon Village Reptile and Conservation Park.
Natie Swart was bitten on the right arm three times by a puff adder while watching a DVD in the enclosure north of Johannesburg. Swart was first bitten on the foot by a larger puff adder six days after entering the enclosure on Aug. 15. He spent 27 days in hospital, the Johannesburg-based newspaper said on its Web site today.
Two months later he was bitten by a snouted cobra on the same foot, the Times said, citing Swart’s Web site. Dennis said after three separate attacks it was too risky for Swart to continue with the challenge of living in a cage with 40 snakes, the newspaper said.
Puff adder venom causes tissue damage while cobra venom attacks the nervous system.

Nothing was being proved or accomplished in my eyes except for showing the public that interaction with these animals should be banned. The AR rights activists probably funded this ordeal.

Even if it was overseas they can use this as an argument to further restrict the hobby or totally ban them altogether. He can do what he wants by all means but its stupid acts like this that ruin it for all the responsible keepers in the trade. The AR activists and the HSUS will use anything to get their way in and brainwash the politicians.

Martin is certain people's hero, but anyone else is a wackjob? Why the double standard? It seems to be commonplace in the venomous community these days...
"wonderful. more bad publicity for our hobby"
Yeah. Someone in South Africa trying to break a record and raise funds is going to be the final nail in the coffin for the hobby. Are you serious?
"Nothing was being proved or accomplished in my eyes except for showing the public that interaction with these animals should be banned."
So, you're basically saying that hot keeping should be banned? I'm assuming you've never kept hots before, if you have, you'd know that interaction is unavoidable.

Does anyone know how much money was actually raised vs how much money was spent on medical treatment, etc? I would like to know. As far as teaching people anything, unless they showed pictures of the assorted symptomes he suffered (live feed) with a doctor explaining his treatment, what is there to be learned other than not to put your arm on a Puff Adder.
