Not to start the age old argument, but maybe you're having trouble finding info about the boundary because their isn't one. Crotalus horridus is one species, not two subspecies, at least at this time according to the latest scientific inquiries. Until this is proven otherwise, the "debate" over this is null and void.

HMMM....CANEBRAKES MUST BE "LIGHT PHASE" TIMBERS THEN. I CAN'T POSSIBLY CONCUR WITH THAT.....TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THERE'S REASONABLE PROOF THAT CANES VENOM IS MORE POTENT THAN TIMBERS.

Wrong answer, the boundry does start somewhere in N Carolina. I have hunted Timbers for 20 yrs and have never found a canebrake North of the carolinas. I don't care what anyone says, the snakes look as different as the Eastern Diamond and the Western diamond.

You are very right cottonmouth, even though the Western and Eastern Diamondbacks DNA is almost exact, they are considered 2 species. I live in W Virginia and have never in 57 years found a canebrake.

Actually that's the wrong answer as well, canebrake's, as well as timber's, occur in Virginia.
Check out the link.

The last canebrake found in Va, was caught in the Dismal swamp in 2001 in Suffolk. That is the only place in Va and mega rare at that.
