That's very interesting. I have an impression that a lot of people out there view Aspidelaps as being a "safe" or "starter" elapid. I wonder if it would work to start a snakebite history thread where any keepers that have been bitten could voluntarily [and if desired, anonymously] post at least the year and species of snake they were bitten by. If they want to share more information, that would be up to them. It might not be comprehensive or scientific, but I think it could be interesting.

Fred, it would be interesting to see a thread like that.
As far as Aspidelaps, the venom is quite complex, but is delivered in a small dose.
With no antivenin available, it would be interesting to know just how a bite would be treated by medical folks, and just what effects the bite would cause. Most likely, the person bitten would not have much fun.
I have only found one death recorded from South Africa, and that was a 4 year old child.

John, as a keeper of 2.2 Aspidelaps l. lubricus, I would also be very interested in the details of the Aspidelaps bite, specifically with regard to the medical treatment and the severity of symptoms. Marty

Guys, trust me when I say that I understand the need for bite information regarding Aspidelaps.
However, I am sure you understand that the only reason that some people are willing to share their bite information with me is because they know I won't disclose it without their permission. I cannot violate that and still expect to get any information from people.
If they make their bite information public, that is their call, not mine.
Sorry.

No one is asking you to supply any information about the Aspidelaps bite Karl.
Although it would be interesting, there are plenty of clinical cases about bites (mostly from South Africa, but, a few here in the states) that I can post on my Aspidelaps site, and I will be doing that just as soon as I have a bit of time to do the research.
I am also finding a lot published about the venom composition and am tracking down those articles.
Some of the folks from South Africa will probably supply first hand accounts of bites when they get around to it.
It is fairly easy to locate abstracts for articles in scientific journals, however, it is a lot more difficult to find free access .pdf files of the whole articles that can be shared.
Best Regards

Not if Karl was asked to protect the persons name.
I applaud Karl for keeping his word to the person who was bitten.Maybe the person wants to keep it quiet. Maybe he is embarassed by it.

Not everyone that I deal with and/or correspond with even know about the forum here. They may eventually post about it here or not. I have no way of knowing.
I have no totals for any years or anything. My files are just a collection of first-hand accounts of bites and treatments and after-effects that I have collected.
Way too many people have gotten into this "hobby" thinking that if they get bitten, Venom 1 will fly to their rescue with the magic antidote (antivenom) and they will be good as new.
This is so far from the truth!
A good friend was bitten some years back by a Rhinoceros Viper, got antivenom and survived. But he lived with chronic pain for the rest of his life which required a drastic mixture of pain medicines just to manage the pain. This greatly reduced his ability to be hired in the job market and earn a living. He died last year of other causes and the truth is that I miss talking to him and telling him that he should write about his experiences.
So, I have started "The File" and when someone I know (or know of) gets bitten, I try to put together as much information about it as possible. It may never amount to anything but maybe I will be able to eventually use it to make at least one smug young person realize that they NEED TO BE CAREFUL (!!!!!) and not depend on other people to try to save their butts! That a bite may be survivable but still have severe life-altering effects.
Sorry to take so much space on a personal soap-box type issue but I honestly believe that getting bitten is NOT an eventuality in this business.
Thank you, Randal. It is good to see that someone recognizes the real issue as to why I cannot share everything I am told.
