I have a question on the permits some states issue for the keeping of venomous snakes. The Utah division of wildlife resources has proposed a change in the laws on rattlesnakes. They have an e-mail address were you can send in your suggestion. Before I send my suggestions, I had a question. What is the age limit that most states set for getting a permit? They have set the proposed bill age limit at 21. I vaguely recall that some states have an age limit of 19 or twenty but I can't be sure. So my question is what are the age limits for permits of each state that allows venomous snakes? Any help and input would be appreciated. Thanks, Taylor

Only two age limits meet with any supportable precedents.
18 is the age of majority where one can legally enter a contract of military service.
21 is the age at which one may purchase and indulge in alcohol.
Any other age limit is just an arbitrary guess at an elusive whimsical thing called maturity.
Just my opinions.

To me if a person can fight for his country he should be old enough to get a snake permit.Utah is taking a giant step and I commend them if they think 21 is the magic number well good show.In this age of constant attack this is a small voice for us saying it is ok.I am truly amazed at this. These guys will also be able to collect concolor just amazeing good news for Utah herpers. It is a small light but not that small and in fact huge for them Utah guys.I just think she is great.

Utah having a realistic law is a good thing.
If someone can serve the country in the military at age 18, they sure should be able learn to be a safe reptile keeper at that age.

Then I say "18" if you are in the military and "21" for everyone else?:-) Those in the military are taught discipline, hard work, respect, self control, attention to detail and following protocol and other core values that bode well with keeping hots. Many 18 year olds, unfortunately, are not even close to being ready for venomous keeping simply because they don't have the resources to do so. Maturity is something that varies widely. Anyway, this will just flame into a public outcry from the young-ins so I'll keep 'er quiet.
