Hello,
I was just in a First Aid training put on by Red Cross in Carson City, NV and was informed that native rattlesnakes found in northern Nevada were not poisonous. If one was found to be poisonous, it came from the southwest. I thought all rattlesnakes were poisonous.
Can someone let me know where I can find literature that tells me if this is true or false. I would like to know personally but more importantly I don't want false information taught to my coworkers. There will be two more classes given at my place of work, and I want to give the teacher proper information on the subject.
Thanks for your help, Doug

Crotalus viridis lutosus (Great Basin Rattlesnake) are found in northern NV, I think they have sidewinders there also. My family and I (I was 6) went camping out in the Black Rock Desert in Northern, NV, a long time ago, and one of the people that went with us was bit by a rattlesnake and had to be rushed to the hospital (miles and miles away). They can and will give dry bites, but they are still dangerous and venomous. Where did you get this info from?

Crotalus64,
I got the information from a First Aid teacher of the Red Cross. I did not think it was reliable, so this is why I am looking for written documentation to give the teacher. I don't want people thinking they don't have to worry about rattlesnakes in northern Nevada.
Thanks for the info, Doug

Hello Sabrewing,
I assure you that all rattlesnakes, regardless of geographic location, are venomous; especially the western rattlesnake species such as the Great Basin Rattlesnakes. Thanks for telling us all a new story about what some people believe. Did she tell you if the rattlesnakes in the southeast were venomous or not? I have caught Great Basin Rattlesnakes north of Nevada in Idaho and Oregon and can guarantee they are venomous. It would help out a lot for that lady and the people that she speaks to if you told her the truth. You might have to get a book or something though because some people are just too stubborn to believe anything you tell them unless they see it on tv or in a book. There are a lot of different books you could get, so check out your local library and bookstore and see which one is the best for you and gives the information you need. Learn what kind of snakes are in your area and be able to identify the venomous ones, so you know which ones are a potential threat. However, if you want to be absolutely sure that you will stay safe, then when you see one just stand in the distance and watch them from afar.
