John, the picture you saw of Puff-osaurus does not do it justice. He is a bit over 4 foot and hovers around 16 pounds. One of the most common misconceptions I see with snakes is people estimating thier weights. Not just snakes, but most animals. I had a big atrox that everyone at the center claimed was a 20 pounder. I laughed and said it might go 10. I put it in the scales and it came in at 7.5 lb. Even the big easterns are usually way overestimated. Not to say rattlesnakes can't reach 20 pounds, but it's a rarity. Pythons are the biggest of the overestimated snakes. I hear of the 250 pounders and I look at most of them and estimate maybe 100 at best.
Pick up a snake with a hook. Then hook a couple gallons of water onto a hook and feel the difference is a good analogy.
I have seen bigger Puffs. Houston has a monster. Even that one come in at about 20 according to my sources.

Doug,
I agree that most folks do not estimate the weight of snakes very well at all. Unless someone has actually weighed a lot of snakes with a scale, they really do not have anything to base their guesses on.
The same goes for length of snakes. Even experienced herpers often overestimate that.
Perhaps it goes back to the old bigger is better thing that so many folks seem to like to use?
I can tell that the puff in your photos is a impressive size. But, like you said, there are some out there that are even larger. The one I was talking about was one of those.
Best Regards

In my experience, at least among the general public, there is a tendency to automatically add 2' to the length of any snake they see.

I had fun wrangling with a wild caught green mamba a couple months ago. I would have sworn it was 6'+, but the guys who took it home assure me it is only about 4'. LOL

hey all.the story behind the whole puff adder thing is this:I really did not want to sell her because she had been with me for 10 years.I figured that I would be able to keep her if no one buys her.I had already made 6450$ off my reptile collection so I figured that I could sell my hots for a low price.Oh by the the way, Gretchy is not some scammer from africa; she is a very nice person though she has bad spelling.
