We can't police other peoples homes. No matter what rules you apply to your shows, no matter what age the law says. If a parent buys their 14 yr old son hots there is no way for us to stop it. How would you even know unless they tell you? Are you not going to sell to him just because he has a teenager with him at the show? I've had teenagers with me at shows. And I've bought hots at those shows. All he has to do is say its for him. And if that same kid goes out into the woods and catches a copperhead and brings it home, there is nothing we can do about it. All you can do is follow the laws, And don't knowingly sell to a minor. They will still be out there no matter what we do. I was. Take care, Marty

At the risk of being pounced on I will weigh in and say I think the minimum age should be 18. It is a little arbitrary and I will admit that I was younger when I began. The problem is I fear for the future of the hobby. If we don't take steps to mitigate risk we will have regulation or bans forced upon us. When I was young it was not possible for me to purchase a Gabboon viper inexpensively on the internet or a show. I applaud show promoters that take responsibility and strictly police there shows.
So while I know there are younger folks that could be potentially responsible and safe under the right circumstances and supervision. Easy accessability and instant gratification of a whim that could have catastrophic impact on the hobby justify taking action to limit the participation of youngsters. IMO....

Andrew is right. Age 18 is the majority for most of the United States.
At that age, you can Vote for the President and the folks who make the laws.
At that age, you can legally enter a contract.
At that age, you can sign a mortgage to purchase a house.
At that age, you can get married.
At that age, you can run for many public offices.
At that age, you can join the Military, and risk your life for the defense of our Country.
At that age, you could have been legally driving an automobile for two years in many states.
At that age, you can legally purchase a rifle, shotgun, or, ammunition for that firearm.
About the only thing that you can not do until age 21 in this country, is purchase a handgun, or, purchase alcohol, or run for some public offices. In a way that makes sense, as a 18 year old could still be in high school, and could purchase alcohol for younger friends.
It is preposterous that that some backward towns, cities, and owners of rental venues consider that age to be to young to own or purchase a venomous snake.
But, they have the right to be backward if they want. That is what freedom is about, I guess.
Like I stated earlier, I agree with Andrew. Age 18 is a reasonable age to start to be trusted with adult responsibilities.

Chance:
"So to answer the question, yes I do support age restrictions on keeping venomous. Is 18 or 21 better, honestly neither one is great."
My response:
Hey while we're at it, lets make the age limit 35 since that's the age you have to be to be president in the U.S. I mean they have a reason for that right? If you are not mature enough to be president of the U.S., than your not mature enough to keep venomous snakes right? An animal that can end your life so fast requires the utmost maturity and so does the office of the president.
Your own personal experiences don't mean anything at all in this context. Just because you were like that at those ages, does not mean the rest of us are. You even stated yourself that you have never been bitten, and that is ALL that matters. Just because you don't trust yourselves with venomous snakes doesn't mean you have the right to take away ours. This is the same exact mentality that people who want to take away our rights have. Not to mention the bashing of an establishment that chooses to raise the flag of its choice. If you don't like it, don't eat there. With people like this in our hobby, it's not surprising that we are going to lose our rights to keep exotic animals soon.

I just can't believe that this thread is still going on.
Usually by now people recognize a few things.
1) In most states the age of consent is set by law.
2) None of those states is going to change its laws based on anything that gets said in the forums here.
3) Everyone has an opinion on this, usually based on their own personal experiences.
4) Even the people who agree about where the age limits should be set, still can't agree on most of the other things that show up in these threads.
5) IT IS SPRING!
6) Go find some herps, pair up what you've got, go work with someone else's herps to get your experience, whatever.
7) Don't waste your life arguing in this thread about something that you are never going to be able to change.
8) The beauty of an age limit - be it 18, 21, or 35 - either you will eventually get there or (if you don't make it to that age) whether you keep venomous snakes or not will not matter.
Now, can we end this foolishness?
