The NC Wildlife Resources Commission website is actually well organized and fairly easy to navigate.
You could start on this page:
https://www.ncwildlife.org/License/License_OtherPermits.htm#wildlife_possession
Finding wildlife resources information is not all that difficult. You start with a search engine called "Google," then you type in the name of your State and follow that by "Game and Fish," or "Fish and Wildlife," etc. When you find their site, you find the "Search Box," and try things like "Special Permits," "Wildlife Permits," Wildlife Liscenses," "Scinetific Collection Permits," "Wildlife Collection," Wildlife Possession," "Non Game Wildlife," etc. One of those will get what you are looking for.
Or, you will at least find a telephone number to call.
I really wonder if folks just do not know how to use search engines, or, are just lazy ? Some state websites are so poorly organized that it might take you 45 minutes to find what you are looking for. It only took me 5 minutes to find the NC permits page listed above.
Best Regards

And hope that the site has been updated. If you search SC as John suggested for NC, you will come up with Walt Rhodes as the man in charge of gators. And when you use the email address provided, it will ricochet.

I believe all those permits are for rehabilitation or collecting from the wild. I have not been able to find anything on obtaining permits for ownership of CBB gators. I have also been trying to find this out, but rather than call (and draw attention to the legal but often frowned on animals i do own) I got caimans instead. I would still love to get a gator, but don't know if i want all the attention and possible inspections of my home to do it. If anyone knows what the state requires and can give me a little more info i might make the call, but since i can't seem to find any info without calling...

While we are at it, the same info for permits for my native venomous would be nice. I can own all the exotics i want but can't own a cbb timber or EDB.

If you are in NC and serious about setting up a public display, pay a visit to Cape Fear Serpentarium in Wilmington and have a chat with Dean or Tanith. It's worth the trip and they can fill you in on what it takes to make a place like that work.

Steve,
It can be extremely difficult getting permits as an individual.
Setting up an animal rescue might be a solution.
Or, setting up a small zoo, museum, or other educational business might work.
Or, if you work at a university or museum, you might be able to get a scientific collection permit under the permit the university or museum has.
Every state has different laws and regulations.
And, even though they say permits are available, in many states, the never issue those permits, even though they are supposed to.
Most likely, you can find a way to make things work, but, it might require starting a business, and it might require a insurance bond, and it might require a separate building, etc.
Some states make the rules so difficult, that almost no one will bother to try to get special permits.
Best Regards

John gave precisely correct instructions and led directly to the permit dept of WRC. Alligators are threatened/endangered... that is the permit you will need. Contact Tammy Minchew. Word to the wise... if you have your act together it is not that difficult to get permit. If you don't appear to be on the ball, you will shoot yourself down w/ Tammy and never get a permit for anything. Best to do your research on WRC site and know exactly what you want and what is required before you have substinative contact with the dept.

I didn't see a threatened/endangered permit on there. I saw one for keeping wild animals, but it didn't say threatened in the description anywhere. What all do i need set up before i call. Caging for the native venomous i would like to get is easy. I already have plenty of hot cages since i keep exotic hots. For the gator would i need the adult cage finished already? What are the state requirements in size, fencing, ect. I can build what ever i need. I'm a contractor with access to heavy equipment, but i need to know sizes. Of course as a baby it would be in a much smaller enclosure
