Hey guys, I've got a burmese python that has a minor respiratory problem. All he is doing is kind of wheezing.
His cage is never dirty for more then a couple hours when I am at work. Never wet, not to dry, never cold. He is still eating great, no bubbles, gaping, nothing besides a small, kind of wet sounding "wheeze".
I discovered this problem about a 4-5 days ago, and since then I've been keeping him warmer. He is doing better.
My biggest question is should I increase or decrease the humidity levels?
Thanks in advance,
Jon Short

You need to provide a lot more info...what are the exact temps and thermal gradients? What are the actual humidity levels? "Just enough" or "warm enough" doesn't really give any info. Obviously, I'll start by saying that if you have any concerns, seek proper veterinary care. Aside from that, make sure the temps are indeed warm enough - I would recommend a gradient that ranges from 79-80 on the cool end to the low to mid 90's on the warm end. Also, I have found that increase humidity, w/out decreasing quality air flow, oftentimes clears up those nagging wheezing ailments. But, I'll just end by saying if it were mine, I'd be taking it to the vet.

The lack of information is why I did not respond to the question. Jon you left a lot of gray area in the background information. What is the current humidity? What is the temperature gradient, not only during the day, but also in the night and early morning? A gradient of 80-90 during the day, could be lower during the night of first thing in the morning this time of year. That is the reason why I try to maintain a higher ambient temperature in my snake room and do much of the temperature control on a larger scale. Hope the snake gets better. I agree with Rob, a vet visit may be the best path before infection sets in.

Before, the day-time temperatures were 80-82 on the cool side, with a hot spot at around 93-95. Now the "cool" side is 88-90 and the warm side 95-98. The humidity before the problem was 25%-40%.

For future reference if I were you, I would check temperatures at different times of the day during different seasons. I monitor my temperatures and adjust my rheostats accordingly with the seasons. During summer months, I will turn heat sources completely off from time to time. Systems can be purchased will also do this for you. Hope the snake gets better soon. Take care!
