Yes. They seem determined to throw the proverbial book at him. On the other hand, the circumstances indicate that he broke the law. I suspect there will be some sort of plea resulting in a major reduction of the charges.

I can't fathom why this would be a point for discussion on this forum, and it has been respected as such by the lack of response. Thank you all.

What better place to discuss a fatal venomous snake bite followed by the arrest of someone whom I understand was a "major player" in the reptile community.
If you do not like the subject - you dont have to read or respond to it - thanks!

The death has already been discussed and the legal matters are best kept between attorney and client.

The term "major player" was used to describe Mr. Hurd in an article written by journalist Kate Harrison.
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2011/feb/04/charles-hurd-arrest-snakebite-death/
I do not know Mr. Hurd personally nor have I ever had any interaction with any of the parties involved. Nor do I care to speculate on his guilt or innocence. Based on many of the envenomations and arrests discussed here it would seem that law enforcement tactic has changed. In the past (say a decade or more) when arrest were made prosecution seemed to have focused on the most serious of the possible charges or ones with the most penalties/fines. Now it seems like they are pursuing any and every possible charge.

Chuck is not a "major guy" in this business/hobby. He's been a contributor to forums and a source for (hopefully) legal snakes. The real "major players" in this hobby/profession would die if they were mentioned in any way regarding anything Chuck is or has been involved with now that he is under suspicion of unlawful behavior.
In my opinion, law enforcement people are not stupid. In fact, many of them are very gifted. The cops that monitor this "hot" snake thing at the state level have a very good idea of what's going on. If they decide to move on someone, they honestly feel the person is dirty.
I hope Chuck is proven innocent. I feel he should have behaved in such a fashion that this would never be an issue.
The real "major players" in this business/hobby are above reproach.
