A handful of people that responded to the thread I posted about children and hots responded to the thread in this manner: I don't keep venomous snakes or have kids but I think this..... Or, If I had venomous snakes and had kids I would do this....... Or if you get your kid a venomous snake you should do this.... These are not expert opinions, nor are they answers, they are just remarks from people who don't like the question to begin with. This is why commentors started relating the topic to other threads and started spewing incompetent and unrealistic nonsense. They were just interested in attacking the thread because the question and the topic bothered them in and of itself. A real expert opinion would have been something like this: I have kids and venomous snakes and observed this.... Or my kid catches hots in the field and I saw that he was.... Or I had hots as a kid and was...... That is an expert opinion, and that is the difference between professional advice and incoherent ranting. This is also why only a certain few should be able to respond to the threads. Every one is
Not a expert, and some people have other agendas or are just trying to start fights. And the people with no experience may say things that sound reasonable like "kids shouldn't have hots" and "a bottom up approach is better" but in real life these things have no practical application and in reality all true keepers know this. It's just not politically correct, or as I like to say it, it's not in dumb ignorant plebeian terms.

Fine!
By your definition then, I am an expert.
I raised three children to adulthood and kept venomous snakes throughout their childhood.
I do not believe (MY OPINION) that any child should own or be the sole responsibility for any venomous snakes. By definition, childhood is a time of growing and learning. Interests come and go and the way life is viewed and appreciated change during that growing. If any of my children were interested in venomous snakes, I let them work with me on mine. I did not get them their own.
An excellent example of how that works is this:
My oldest son wanted a dog. He wanted it very badly. My wife acquiesced and he got his dog. He is now married and lives with his wife and her two dogs. His dog? It lives out the rest of its life here at my house!
Kids are kids. They need the time to be kids. They will have plenty of time to make decisions about how to endanger their own life once they are full grown. Until then, it is our job as parents to protect them from danger. Being the sole repsonsible "owner" of a venomous snake is not a safe thing for any child, let alone most adults.
There you have the OPNION that you asked for from an EXPERT by your definition.
That said, please do not denigrate the responses you get on this site. Nobody who will actaully take the time to answer your questions considers themselves to be an expert. But plenty of extremely qualified individuals will try to share their thoughts and experiences with you if you let them.

I am a father and a venomous snake keeper, so by your definition I'm qualified to answer this post and the previous thread.
My son showed an interest in reptiles and he loves working with me on mine. He wanted to get a reptile very badly, so he begged and whined until I decided to start him off with a crested gecko (bottom up approach). After 3 months, he was tired of the gecko and refused to take care of it so now it resides with my zoo collection. He has seen me work with venomous animals but that's as far as it goes. I'll start looking at taking it further when he is mature enough to start learning handling techniques for non venomous snakes, and he certainly isn't getting anything venomous until he is old enough to sign legal documents and also shows the maturity to handle that responsibility (at the bare minimum).
I would not trust a child with an adult's job. That's why there is an age of majority at which one can take responsibility for their own life - and even then, some people just aren't mature enough.
The bottom line is that in the eyes of the law and child services (and of your own conscience) if anything happens to your son, you're ultimately responsible.

Well that's interesting Canadian snake man. Your profile says you were born in 1982 which mean that you are only 29 years old. My question was can a 12 year old keep a hot. For your child to be 12 years old that means you must have had him when you were 17. How old is your child Canadian snake guy ? Also, aren't venomous snakes illegal in Ontario ? Also, doesn't most towns and provinces have laws against them in Canada ? Maybe this is why you wrote in your profile that, " My hots are being kept away from my home due to local laws." But this is weird since almost all provinces in Canada have laws against hots. Where exactly are you keeping your snakes canadian snake man ? I hope you're not breaking the law. Also, if you are not keeping your snakes at home how exactly has your children interacted with hots ? Have you brought the 12 year old child you had when you were 17 to the secret area where its legal for you to keep your hots in Canada and observed that he is irresponsible in keeping them ? Your profile also states that you have only been keeping hots for "4 years, on and off" does that really make you an "expert" ? Most of us caught hots herping as children and kept them as pets. This is what started our passion and fascination for herps. Did you go herping for hots as a child in Canada ?

Thanks for your advice buzztail. I think letting your kids help you with your hots is a good alternative. It's unfortunate that I already made my decision and have decided to get my 12 year old a hot snake. Other opinions like that of varivenom who wrote, " I think if all precautions are taken it should be fine. I myself got checked and licensed by my state at 12 with no problems and bought a gaboon from a very reputable dealer in florida..." really helped put things in perspective. But also buzztail, this is an off topic comment and a good example of how the members of this site do not act professional. In case you were unaware buzztail, the discussion on whether or not 12 year olds should keep hots was closed, and this thread is about whether or not anyone should be able to answer these "expert" threads. Hence, I am going to have to ask that you delete your own comment as it does not belong on this thread. Also, If it is as you say, that " Nobody who will actually take the time to answer your questions considers themselves to be an expert" then perhaps you should change the name of this section to "ask the members." This way you wont mislead people who read these threads into thinking that they are actually talking to experts. Use mislead me at first, good thing I realized I was not actually talking to experts, and started this thread. Now others won't fall for the same mean trick.

I am not Tommy theemojohnm. I hate venomoids, and the people who keep them are evil butchers. They rip their fangs out so that their glands come out and then they just let them bleed out all over until the snake either lives or dies. Their animals and they should all be banned from this site damn it !

Also Canadian snake man, I am sure that a zoo keeper job doesn't pay well. I hope you can feed your kids, if you can't child services may come and take them away, maybe you should start teaching them how to catch snakes for food like you do in the army. But be careful reptile, meet has salmonella, make sure you teach them how to "boil it."

If you don't like want to hear peoples opinions about your question, then you should not post it on the internet. Either take the advice or leave it. Don't whine about it. Get over yourself.
