I don't know the situation, how they were kept and so on. It's hard for me to comment either way. However I agree that this is bad press for the hobby.
I would say, if he could have done things differently to avoid this then he does need to take the blame. If he was following the laws to a T then give the man his snakes back.
I did hear they have not charged him yet. I think they should either do so NOW or give him his snakes back. He either broke the law or didn't, they don't need much time to figure that out do they?

I have found Walter Kidd to always be a friendly and pleasant person to talk with. He always seemed to me to be a very responsible person although I never personally saw his collection. The article does not say what, or if any, laws were broken. It only says that he was bitten, so they decided to raid his home and seize his snakes and then try to determine if any laws were broken.
Take warning from this!
If you are bitten, while you are not there to defend your rights, priviledges, whatever, your collection (legal or not) may wind up in the hands of folks who care nothing at all for the survival of your animals.
And people who know nothing about you will sit at home and pass judgement on you because it is as easy as stroking a few keys on their keyboard!
Walter will be in our prayers for a complete recovery - both health-wise and collection-wise.

It wasn't a derogatory remark about his trailer trash neighbors. It was speaking the truth. If you saw the video of the woman that spoke, she was clearly ignorant trailer trash and had about 2 teeth in her mouth.. I was actually making fun of her more than him. I wasn't really making fun of him, however, clearly it does make sense that he was maybe not an idiot(that was a little harsh and I apologize) but at the very least he was extremely unprepared for whatever happened to him. It seems the cages that I saw in piles on the video were not venomous safe. If they were clearly labeled I do not know. The species he was bitten by should've been known by him to tell the hospital where the nearest species specific AV was or better acquired his own as some responsible keepers do. It is apparent there was not much of a bite protocol in place and that is in the top 5 of things to do when keeping venomous if not #1. Bottom line is another irresponsible venomous keeper had their animals taken away who apparently had no business having them in the 1st place. He also managed to give another big blow to the already strengthening of legislature against those in our hobby attempting to stop this kind of crap and keep our animals that we love safely and responsibly. And he was hurt in the process, which unfortuantely I do not care. Play with fire long enough and you will get burned and he did.I hope he is never allowed to own a single snake again. They deserve better.Enough ranting.

Wow elaphidkeeper. That is pretty harsh. You seem very quick to judge people with out all of the facts.
I have read Walters bite account, it is on Venomland. Like usual the media made him seem like he had no plan or idea what kind of animal he was bitten by. He did have emergency protocol. He was at the hospital in 15 min with antivenom being helicoptered in. He had a full on envenomation from Viper ammodoytes (spelling). It took 8 vials of antivenom to bring him around.
It was the fist time he had worked with this particular species and basicly misjudged the animal and got tagged on two fingers. It was a mistake that anyone really could make.

I agree Karl. If you are bit people shake their head and call you an idiot and a fool. (Maybe silently in their head)
When "they" who called you a fool and an idiot get bit it was just a mistake, no big deal.
When a snake dies in your care people are quick to judge how you keep them but when their snake dies they are quick to say, "This sort of thing just happens".
Now if one is bit many, many times, you may just be an idiot and bad for the hobby!

I was pretty sure it was Dienagkistrodon, but then I recently saw somewhere where someone said it was Vipera ammodytes.

Umm...I don't think it was too harsh. Never worked with the species before? Hmm...maybe he didn't fully understand what the animal was capable of it sounds possibly. Better do more research next time.
