Sorry for the embarrassment to the hobby. However, here is an article that points to how this issue and ones like it began. This is not entirely my fault.

http://insideedition.com/news/6872/inside-edition-investigates-selling-snakes.aspx
The simple issue and we all know it is some vendors and/or breeders put money value over anything. As long as your in a legal place to buy the animal, such as South Carolina and have the money, they could careless where it goes from there. Hell even the most respected persons in the venomous community have pointed out that we need to police ourselves better and watch who you sell to.
Looking at it from the outside in neither the kid nor I were experience enough to own or possess something like this. Like I said I take full responsibility for my actions and offer my apologies to the hobby.

First of all, thank you for the honesty, if you are in fact one of the parties involved. I checked your profile and believe you are. Second, I checked the two links you provided and basically both are about news articles of legal sales of venomous reptiles in states where it is unpopular, but legal. I am curious as to how this is "not entirely your fault". If the original article is correct, the sale happened on an exit ramp on the side of the interstate, in a state that has specifically banned exotics. Even if you both come from states where it is legal, you conducted a transaction in a state that bans this... How is not entirely your fault. Please keep me posted, as first hand experience is almost always more acurate the news articles.
thanks,
william

I would love to fill you in on the details however I am in serous legal troubles and it is in my best interest not to add any more details to my legal coffin. The only person who lived in a state where the animal was legal to own or even halfway legal though was me. He acquired the animal from somewhere not knowing it was illegal in his home state because as he told me “man I keep many rattlers.” Once he found out it was illegal he was in a panic to dump it off.
I said it is "not entirely my fault” because this animal originated somewhere. This animal, like many others include ones in article, was sold legally but not ethically. Just because a state, such as South Carolina, does not prohibit the sale of venomous nor have any restrictions other then being 18 years old does not mean the transaction should be allowed to take place. Just because he was 18 and met in a state where the sale was legal does not mean he should have been allowed to buy it, ethically speaking. Like I said before there are to many vendors, breeders and importers who are willing to look the other way on a sale just for the dollar. They could careless of a person’s ability to care for the animal, where animal is going or even a person’s knowledge of the animal being bought. Think of it as kind of a don’t ask and don’t tell as long as we are in a legal state. Just like in the video the vendor did not even ask for references, training, look at I.D. or ask where the home state of the female buying the cobra was. Why because as long as she had the money (and over 18) in the current state the animal was sold in, the sale was legal, not exactly professional but legal. I am sure talking to this kid that is exactly the circumstances the “supposed” Mamba, as you put it, came from.
I am getting out of this hobby now and giving all of my venomous to the local Zoo. This is simply because I want this to go away and I don’t have the resources to fight the local, state and federal agencies on this issue. I also found out the hard way that many in this community jump the gun and publicly shame another without knowing the entire facts. I was not even off of life support or out of a comma yet and was already being attacked. So in light of that and listening to my wife and attorney I think it is best if I don’t speak on the details and give up my animals all together. I figured since it was the Zoo who supplied the A/V that saved my life and they will take forever care of the animals that better to give them to.
One thing I can say though before I leave is that if this hobby does not implement better policies on how sales and transferees are conducted that it will be shutdown. People such as the kid I met will continue to be allowed to impulsively buy and honestly not knowing what there buying and incidents like this will keep happening. Sooner or later the government will get enough public outcry and ban it all together.
Thanks,
John
and again sorry for the bad media attention.

I have many more questions, but I understand your legal issues as well. I'll drop the subject here. I am still interested in updates. If you can and prefer it's not public, you can find my e-mail in my profile.
Thanks,
WLS

I really would love to fill you in but like I said but can’t as. Sorry and it truly does sadden me because you guy’s opinion really means a lot to me as this forum, hobby and animals have been a major part of my life for years. Also just so you know nothing in this hobby is private and I mean NOTHING when and it the shit ever hits the fan for you, you to will see. Currently FWC, GA DNR, US Fish and Game and US Customs are currently investigating me so I am sure whatever form I communicate with you can be found. Sorry but I know punishment is coming and it is time for me to look out for what is in my and my family’s interest.

Interesting that the profile is rather scanty. I smell a rat!

I'm sure I am not the only one who would appreciate very much if you would drag the state of s.c. Name thru the mudd you created either. Best of luck. Research your legalities before hand next time.

And why in the world is South Carolina mentioned more than once when the situation was a GA / FL thing?

and now that my blood pressure has abated a bit, I've gotta say that the zoo -- any zoo -- doesn't want your questionable critter. They DO want their antivenin. Whenever they have to use their a/v to bail out some yoyo who gets tagged by an exotic that he/she shouldn't have, they are putting their staff at risk. Granted, the professionals are less likely to be bitten than the offramp transaction chumps, but there is always the possibility of an accident. Can you imagine the tragedy if a keeper was tagged on the job for whatever reason while a roadside hobbyist was sucking up the serum? Shame on you!
