You could say the same thing about a .22 and .45, or a bus and a VW Bug. I'm not into splitting hairs. If it's venomous, it can kill you. Even if the species has no official reported deaths, I don't want to risk being the 1st one. Keep your fingers out of it's mouth. Take care, Marty

I don't think I've seen him ask his questions in terms of which would you rather be bitten by. Maybe I missed it. Isn't it possible to have a genuinely scientifically curious conversation without it having to delve into practical application of said information? Maybe he's just curious about toxicity. I know that intrigues me and I no longer even keep venomous species.

Thanks Chance, I never did ask "which snake would you rather be bitten by", I asked for the venom potency of a particular species. The only info I have about the venom potency of this species (N. oxiana) is a SC LD50 of 0.4 mg/kg (Brown, 1973).
To najasuphan, well the paper you linked me to lists an intraperitoneal (IP) LD50 of 0.12 mg/kg for N. christyi and 0.14 mg/kg for N. annulata. IP LD50 values are routinely much more toxic than SC LD50 values. IP LD50 values are even usually more toxic than values given for intravenous (IV) injection. So I highly doubt that N. christyi or N. annulata have a more potent venom than N. philippinensis and I'd say they'd probably fall behind a couple of other Naja species as well. Island bound cobras seem to have a particularly potent venom.

My Bad. I guess I was thrown off by the question, "does that make N. oxiana one of the most venomous cobras in the world?" in the original post. I wouldn't want to "dis" anyone's education efforts, maybe I read it too fast and just took it as another, "what's the most poisonous snake" question. Take care, Marty
