I had a student ask me this today and did not know how to answer. Gave the usual explaination distinguishing venomous and poisonous. I do seem to recall that ring-necks may be poisonous if ingested by some species.

First off snake are venomous not poisonous. And the ringneck possess a very mild venom in their saliva which the have to chew into their prey. Not harmful to humans.

Boy being sick messes with my typing skills. I meant possesses not possess. I hope my answer helps a little. I used to love catching ringnecks as a child. Never kept them due to the fact that they are usually very stubborn to get feeding.

There are many reports of ring necked snakes being poisonous when ingested by coral snakes, I read one article somewhere that mentioned it was from the musk/musk glands. I really don't know if it's true, maybe someone else has documentation. To be safe, I never feed my coral snake ring necked snakes. Better safe than sorry. Take care, Marty.

Think it could be similar to millipedes releasing a cyanide type chemical when threatened?

Assuming that what the student actually wanted to know was whether they are venomous, then I think the answer I would give would depend on whether we're talking about a college student or a second grader.
For the college student: Like many if not most snakes, ringnecks are in a certain technical sense, venomous but not dangerous to anything larger than perhaps a medium sized garden lizard.
For the second grader: No.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that the complete answer (based on other responses) to the student's original question is that ring-necked snakes are both venomous *and* poisonous...
As pointed out by Mr. Sieber and others...ring-necked snakes "possess a very mild venom...," concluding that the species is indeed venomous (albeit not harmful to humans).
As noted by Mr(?) Mayernik, ring-snakes have also been reported as "being poisonous when ingested by coral snakes," which would conclude that their toxic capabilities also meet the definition of "poisonous."
Is this correct with respect to ring-necked snakes and if so, are there other species that exhibit both traits?
Thanks...

'..."being poisonous when ingested by coral snakes," which would conclude that their toxic capabilities also meet the definition of "poisonous."'
Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but if someone asked you if chocolate is poisonous, would you say "yes"? Not without qualifying the answer, and in most contexts if someone asks if something is poisonous, they mean is it poisonous to humans.
My point was just that saying that ring-neck snakes are venomous without some qualification, or to someone who won't really understand the qualification can be misleading and will be repeated to others without the right context.
