Hello all,
It's been a while since I have visited this site.good to see it's alive and well.
Anyway, I was in southeastern Kentucky this past summer doing some snake hunting hoping to maybe get a big eastern,or timber rattler. I ran across a nice sized copper on the road at night while on my way to a hunting site, so I put it in the bucket(because let's face it,if it had been a "good old boy" that seen it first they would have stopped and ran it over many times and then driven away high five'in). No luck with rattlers that trip but had that nice big copper. Once I got it home I noticed the snake was beyond Plump, that's when I started to suspect it was a gravid female. Sure enough about an hour after getting her into an enclosure she started giving birth. Now, I pretty much figured it was due to stress and that she was not ready to give birth.I was right, she had 2 neonates born alive and kicking then stopped, I knew she had more in her so I figured I would leave her alone in the dark for the night and see if she could get the rest out. I checked back in on her first thing in the morning and she was belly up,dead.the 2 neonates that did make it were still fine. I opened her up to see how many were left and there were 4 babies inside of her that didn't make it,so thats what took her out. Now, had I known she was gravid I would not have collected her. I would have removed her from the road and relocated her . I feel bad that it went the way it did. Makes me second guess about trying to make a captive animal from a wild caught animal. I have found it hard in the past to get wild caught animals to feed. So from this past experience I will most likely stick to captive born snakes for my collection. They are more apt to take to captive living, thus less loss of life from otherwise healthy, happy wild snakes.still going to do my hunting, but nomore collecting from the wild...the 2 neonates that survived are doing good and feeding well on frozen/thawed hoppers......Danny

Danny in honor of the dead mother and 7 snakes no longer in the ecosystem you should take one of the neonates back and release it where you found the gravid female.
Cheers!!
