I have been keeping venomous for a few years now and I would like to start keeping a cobra.
I was wondering, to those of you who are or have kept Naja species before, what was your first species?
I would think that I should start out with the species I am interested in, with a hatchling. I am interested in Naja samarensis the most but I am unsure if that would be the most intelligent choice.

I think samarensis is a good choice. The size is much smaller than others like kiaouthia. The price finally came down on them. Also you cant compare. Each snake has a diffrent personality. My firs were Siamensis. I loved them. Eventually you will wind up getting a pair of Samarensis. If you always wanted a Harley why buy a yamaha first. Then you spent double the money. They are both bikes and both potentially dangerous or deadly.

Not that funny to be honest and why can't you spell-out your own profession correctly?
"remeadiation"
That's more comical to me than anything else. ;)

I was curious if it were a Mustangus shelbyi or the more common ponyi. Just kidding. I wish samar cobras were less expensive and more common 14 years ago when I got my first elapid. I would have choosen one. Good luck keep us posted.

If you start off with a hatchling anything is fine. I started off with two hatchling kaouthias and had 12 different species within a year.

I believe that Naja samarensis is probably the front runner and the one want to get. I will think about it more carefully and I want to get a trap cage for this purpose - one that will enable me to put a divider through for maintenance, as it seems like limiting contact with any cobras would be a good idea. I will probably get 2 trap hides on the hot and cool side as well. A face shield or a pair of goggles, I would think that a face shield would be more uncomfortable as it fogs up the vision, but I sure as heck don't want any venom shot up my nostrils.
Am I over thinking this? Within the current venomous culture, a cobra may not seem like a big deal as a lot of people are keeping Naja kaouthia it seems, but to me it all comes back to what everyone else thinks- owning a cobra is a very serious business.

I have been accused of being too safe, which to me makes no sense. Anything you can do increase your safety and/or the safety of the animal(s) is a positive. Trap boxes are great. Anytime you can eliminate the need to be hands on, greatly reduces chances of an accident. Take care and be overly safe.
