I live in South Eastern Pennsylvania and I'm looking to catch a Copperhead for catch and release. I'm not new to catching snakes, but I can't seem to find any copperheads and I know they should be in abundance where I live. Any good advice?

I believe it is illegal. And why would you want to catch one? Then release it? If you needed to relocate one because it were in someone's garden and let's say kids were at risk. Then I could see catch and release. But the fact you can't find any is a good thing both for the snakes health and the people. If you mess with copperheads or Timbers in P.A. And get bit you will be given a fine. Timbers can only be hunted under a permit and only 1 male is all they give each person a permit for and it must be reported when you obtain a Timber. (And not for a captive). All copperheads are now illegal to own in P.A. Your better of just taking photos of them in nature when you see them. And don't tell anyone where the spots you see them are. This way the snakes will thrive rather than be molested or killed. By closed minded people.

I checked and from what i read you can catch them with a special permit, but I think it's only for hunting. In pa you can own and snake or reptile poisonous or non-poisonous and not endangered as long as it not a native animal. That makes no sense, but that's pa for ya. Thanks for your info.

Per Pennsylvania's current law you may catch and keep one copper head per year that you get a venomous snake hunting permit. You can not sell them. You must have a permit to disturb them even if you don't plan on keeping one. You will have to wait until next year to get a permit they don't sell them after a certain date. Harassing copper heads(or any venomous snake) for no good reason is a bad idea.

I'm not 100% on that. Because I needed to transfer a permit from another state which allowed me to keep Timber and copperheads for educational purposes. When I spoke to P.A. Fish and wild life on the phone they told me the permit they had was to hunt and kill one a year not keep. The permit to keep for educational purposes has not been issued since 2007. I sent them my documentation for them to review, and am still waiting to hear back from them. Wether or not they will grant me permission since I had that permit from another state.

Greg It is hard to tell with the fish commission these days. I live in north central pa. I have kept copper heads and timbers for 10+ years. Have not had any problems thus far with the law enforcement agencies. I catch and keep a copperhead almost every year. I seldom keep a timber unless it is a monster or a morph. I have talked this year to the fish and boat and the fellow I talked to was Chase Rhoades from the Southeast region I asked him flat out at the Hamburg show "How many copper heads and timber rattlesnakes can I keep for my collection"? He stated you can keep one legal timber and one copper head for each year you have purchased a license. Could he have mis spoken? Maybe. But I keep his card and information with all my rattlesnake tags and acquisition files for my snakes. All we can do is follow the law as we understand it.

I have no interest in catching or keeping any timber rattle snakes or copper heads. However, I cant help but wonder, can you breed the copper heads or timber rattle snakes you catch ? What if you catch a gravid one without knowing and it gives birth. What do you do with the babies ? Can you release them back into the wild ? Can you keep them ? Can you sell them in another state where they are legal ?

That's what the hunting permit is for. You can only catch males. You must count scales and it must be a certain length since females don't reach that length.
