What is the best
venomous snake to
start out with? I've
had nonvenomous
snakes for about 5
years, from boas to rat
snakes.

Honestly, the best first Hot is someone elses. I'm not trying to be funny but it is a big step to make. If you know anyone who has any venomous, try to hook up with them and learn about all that is involved. Learn as much as possible and go from there. Also, become familiar with your areas laws. Some states, like Florida, require a permit. Make sure you're not on the wrong side of the law with your animals. State wildlife management peolel rarely have much of a sense of humor when they're dealing with illegally kept animals, and rightfully so.

I think that is some great advice. But If You think you are really ready for your first venomous snake. I would start with something that chances are will not kill you if you get bite. Like a nice copperhead. This type of trend will get a lot of people talking about all the different snakes that make a good first snake. Anyway, I think copperheads are great first snakes...........Fabian

I agree that the first hot snake should be someone else's. But we all know that none of us would actually consider this our first hot snake. I agree when the time comes to get your own hot snake, that the copperhead is one of the best choices. Another choice that is hardly ever metioned is the coral snake. If it does bite you, there is a very good chance that it won't be a hot bite. It must be noted that coral snakes usually need a large enclosure to be successfully kept in captivity.
