Fabian, Chance and many others.
This subject has come up many times. We can flame this again or we can read and learn.
Fabian, When you ask the most basic question about snakes. Whether Coral snakes are front or rearfanged among others.
This is something that "Experienced" keepers learn in the 2nd grade.. Point being, please get rid of the venomous snakes until AFTER you learn more about them. Then get some. You seem like a very well intentioned and genuine guy.
You are just going about it the wrong way. learn first, Experience Second.
Chance when you post about keepingTaipans, and how easy it is for YOU to handle them, and how difficult your friends "Satans Spawn" Copperhead is to handle, and then talk about a Psuedohaja goldi being a D. polylepsis on crack. This is where the people that have worked with all these snakes before, try to point out to you that maybe you should get some experience before taking the plunge to a Taipan. Start slow, learn, grow, experience, survive and enjoy.
Guys these are the reasons that there are flame wars. As well as rude responses.
So many people answer questions that really should not be answering questions.
Many others I watch on here flaming and attacking etc.
From what I have seen on here in the last year or two. I would be called a liar if there were 10 people on here answering a question about anything that really knows something.
It's great to have a place to come and learn. Thats what this place is for. Unfortunately the extremely readily access to venomous snakes now-a-days is creating experts in opinions and baseless experience. Not Reptiles.
The old days are gone, but in the old days there was limited access to animals so it took a long time of working with one venomous snake before another came available. And then another long time before another came along. In order to learn the art of venomous snakes, everyone had to learn from someone elses mistakes.
Now-a-days, this is how it works..
I grow up catching racers, turn 18 get a cobra. and while haveing a beer chat with my friends, he says talk to this guy, he's been keeping cobras for 5 years. This guy proceeds to tell me that "I had a taipan once, it wasn't as hard to handle as my gaboons were. But I didn't like him so I got rid of him or he died" Ya, you've got cobras get a taipan, you'll be fine!
Then the people that have worked with the fastest, most agile, defensive, toxic, intelligent and have I mentioned deadly snakes in the world. We say, Start slow, learn, grow, experience, survive and enjoy.
In closing. There is nothing wrong with being a novice. Everyone was, at one time.
Chance and Fabian, I am not personally trying to insult either one of you or any one else for that matter. I just wish people would not try to go from "being pushed around in baby stroller, to flying an F-16 Fighter Jet in 6 months!
Thats what everyone is doing now-a-days!
Best Regards to all

ok, this is a positive response not a attack. the peaple you mention ,threw the years i have grown to know one of them (fabian) and i feel that even though he is not the best at handling snakes or is the most qualified (cause nobodys the best) i feel that he and they are very competent in ther hobbies. for one, how can one person like you learn so much about people and there experiance in venomous snake . through a internet site . how do you know what they can and can not do .like chance he is young, me and him are close in age i keep venomous snake are you saying i dont know what i am doing you dont even know me nor do you know fabian and chance . the point is you have no right to say who has what it takes to keep hots, and for age dont descriminate aginst young peaple were smarter and in better shape . most of us young keepers have have a hell of a lot more education than some of you old guys(LOL)any way you dont know us so dont judge us (sorry about the spelling and punctuation, its late )I hope not to affend any one .

Shane......in Terry's first post......the man says, "We can read and learn".
Its pretty easy to judge someone by their posts. You can tell how much experience a person has and what kind of person they are. You might be able to tell the author's tone or how tired or how intelligent they are as well. By interracting with one's snakes, one develops an understanding. By continuing to interract with one's snakes, one can continue to build on this understanding and achieve seasoned experience through time. When one applies their understanding to a large amount experience, you could say that wisdom is achieved. There is wisdom in multitudes of counsel, my friend.
In your last post all I am basically getting is that you are tiffed and that
Fabian is
1. Your friend
2. Not very good at handling snakes
You, Chance (ROFLMA), and Fabian should be able to keep venomous snakes snakes based on
1. Your age
A)More educated
B)Smarter
C)Better Shape
Well HELL! I'm convinced.
I have never met Fabian but he seems new at this. Hopefully he tries to learn and sticks with the hobby. You im not so sure about, Shane. Listen to what others say, you might learn something. Do not get so defensive either. Most are happy to share knowledge with new people. I have followed Chance's posts for awhile. He doesn't seem to be the sharpest knife in the cabinet. Its easy to see why he gets yelled at. This guy keeps taipans? Its his right to keep them if he can do so legally but its my right to be concerned about it. He absolutely makes no reservations about using anothers AV stores should this need arise. Its risky at best, pathetic at least!

Just to set the record straight.
Age has little to do with it. I'm not as old as I apparently sound.
It's what you were exposed too. How you dealt with that exposure. And your attitude and ability to learn from others mistakes.
Venomous snakes are wonderful to work with, But a prerequisite of doing so is the ability to listen and learn!
"Snakebite is best learned through experience...
Someone elses!"
After you get your knowledge, find a good mentor, get your secure cage, ** GET YOUR OWN ANTIVENOM **
get your snakes and lets refrain from starting with boomslangs and taipans.
It's what you learn after you know it all that counts!

Shane,
It is statements like yours that show ones inexperience.
And by your statements we would be able to discern your ability or lack thereof to properly keep venomous snakes.
Did you notice that I made a comment about "being called a liar if I said 10 people here answered a question that they knew something about"?
The only people that would take offense to that statement are the people that know they don't have said experience.
The antivenom thing is this.. if you can't afford 500.00 on antivenom every 3-5 years for most types of venomous snakes. Are you also saying that you can afford to pay for the medical costs incurred from a snake envenomation? Which can reach and exceed the $100,000.00 mark! The point is using someone elses AV is endangering that someone elses life! If you can't afford the AV then yes! I am saying that you can not afford the snake.
If you can afford 100.00 for a Cobra, you need to have already paid and recieved
Quote
10 vials of Mononcled Cobra monovalent lyopholized serum @ $18.56 ea.
Which is $185.60, this serum has a shelf life of 5 years.
If you can't afford that then you do not need to keep venomous snakes.
Tell me what species of venomous snakes YOU keep and I will show you how inexpensive it is!
It is inexperience, arrogance and lack of concern for people that are buying the serum!
You also seem like you need to mature a bit before getting into venomous snakes.
Try a corn snake!

Yea if you can't afford to buy AV just steal someone elses. Shane you sound like the ideal candidate for anything else. Not keeping venomous. You don't have to have a mentor to not get bit, but to have one could prove enlightening.
and now your whining about statements because you think im displaying doctoral snobbiness. Shane please, you were the one that stated
"young peaple were smarter and in better shape . most of us young keepers have have a hell of a lot more education than some of you old guys(LOL)any way you dont know us so dont judge us (sorry about the spelling and punctuation,"
Your knife could use some sharpening too.

dont be so defensive if you cant listen to what people half to say then may be you souldent have started all this . i would expect more from the doc YOU ARE THE ONE THAT MAKES YOUR SELF LOOK FOOLISH ,by letting my mild observation of you and your teachers pet.
i'll say agine ASK THE EXPERTS, this is not a prove your self forum ask a question hopfully recieve a correct answer not a comment on ones ability or knowledge.(sorry members yall should not have to be subjected to this kind of treatment from one of your own)
i have said what i wanted to say i really didnt think that this would turn in to a pre school im better than you match . i will no longer be clouting this fourum with this nonsence .

Sheesh!!!!!!....
I tried very specifically to word things so as not to offend, attack or humiliate.
Shane, you need to relax, and read and learn something.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings!
