Please help me with this one. I want to breed my NoeHorned Vipers. I just caught a female a couple weeks ago so there will be no problems with her but the male I have I have kept from august last year and I haven`t put him to hibernate. I read several care sheets that said I could put the viper in burmation just for 2 week or so and it will breed afterwords. I`m a little sceptic on this so that`s why I`m asking whom ever wants to answer if it`s possible. Anticipated thanks.

I don't personally know anyone that keeps these but I do know that I have spoken to several people keeping various US venomous that manage to breed after very short brumation periods.
Not sure if we have anyone with expertise in these animals frequenting this forum.
Good Luck,
Karl H. Betz

Thanks for the tip. I have spoken with people on this forum who keep this species but no none has seemed to answer now. I think I`ll let him hibernate for 2-3 weeks and try to breed him afterwords. One last thing: have you ever heard of snakes dieing or something after hibernation? What could I do for the snake to hibernate well? Thanks again, Alex S.

Hi..
The V. ammodytes is a very "though" snake. I put mine in hibernation between mid December to beginning of March. Using a box (2 lines of 3mmīs holes drilled in the lower shortend and 1 line of 3 mmīs holes in the upper opposite end) and with moisted potplant-substrate (about 2 inches thick layer) whith a piece of pierced styrolite ontop of it, covering the substrate. Moisted sphagnum-moss ontop of that..
I havent had any deaths during hibernation, but be careful so that you donīt feed it to much in the start. No fod for the first week, just a waterbowl and a sprinkle of water i the enclosure..
Hard to explain when you are a "Dumb Swede.." =)
You might get the male started in just 2-3 weeks of hibernation, but maybe the female demands longer time.
Anyway, good luck and if you have more questions about this beautiful snake.. Feel free to ask, I will try to answer as good as I can..
Regards.. Miqe, Sweden
