first off im 20, ive been catching copperheads in my area for some time, and i want to see rattlers now, next week 2 friends and myself are heading for south carolina to search them out. ive always wondered what kind of places you can go search when traveling away from you home to go herping. do you just knock on peoples doors and ask if you can go check out there property?

find good wooded or rocky areas and when you go to other peoples land you must ask if you can herp there if you tell the land owners that you are looking for reptiles tell them that you will remove the venomous snakes even if you dont plan to cause most people will more likly let to on there property if they think your going to help them by removing snakes. also your apperance means alot to whether ther going to trust you on there land (just some ideas )
good luck and be safe

Anwhere you can find a permanent source of water is a good place to look. Junk piles can almost guarantee that you will find something.
Remember the best tool to take on a field herping expedition is not the hook and bag but instead your camera. It is immoral to plunder a site. If you collect, you should take only what you need.
Have fun,

Just some thoughts..first Im not sure what species you are looking for or what section of S.C you will be in..But its getting a bit late in the season for really good hunting..Mar.April being the best months in southern S.C.. However ther are some good road hunting areas in the coastal regions..around Beaufort..Edisto..etc.but these are best in the summer...once the spring -summer foliage get thick its a lot harder to hunt succesfully and just flogging your way through the undergrowth is a chore..EDB's become highly crepuscular at that this time of year..if you find a low lying area you might come across some atricadautus.... As for private land my best rescource has been land agents..realestate people..if you come across as serious and handle your self responsibly..most have no objection and in fact will be happy to let you remove all the snakes you want!..all the private places i have access to in S.C are directly a result of hitting up private hunt clubs or ther land agents..
hope some of this helps

If you are not planning on removing any snakes, I would suggest that you check out federal and state preserves around the area. The woods around these places often remained undisturbed other than by the occassional hiker. I have found that they offer a wide range of herps. This will also give you a rough idea of where you will end up, which should make planning the rest of the trip a little easier.
Good Luck,
Will
