I live in Southern California. Say I was road cruising and found a Gila Monster on the road. Is it legal to grab it? This scenario happened to me when I was on the way to AZ and I just looked at it because I didn't know if it was legal to take them out of the wild

Thanks Shane, It would have been so easy for me to snatch the little critter but I was afraid they were on the endangered list in the wild. Plus I don't really want to pay the 1000 to 1500 buck price tag on a captive bred Gila. Anyone else out there that may have info on that for me, it would be appreciated.

It is illegal to handle, harass or collect Heloderma in all of its range. They are neat animals but are endangered species protected by state and CITIES laws.
If you buy one ask for all paperwork. You will need it.

When I lived in Tucson, AZ I was almost arrested and fined ($5,000) for "bothering" an endangered species one evening. It did not matter to the trooper that I was "shepparding" the Gila across a 6 lane highway full of traffic and preventing it from being road kill. He said if it gets killed while crossing the road...oh well...just that people needed to let "nature" take it's course... He let me go with a warning..
AZ environmental law is really screwed up....It's okay for a contractor developing a tract of land to bulldoze anything in his way...stopping to save an endangered species is not allowed.

In Georgia A developer can not come anywhere near a gopher tortise. Weyerhaeuser can only harvest trees that are no closer the 12 ft from any tortise burrow. If other states had protection like that we would have something to be proud of.

Phobos mentioned a $5,000 fine for bothering an endangered species. Is that correct? I have a friend that did collect a gila in Arizona last year and got busted with it. He only got a $1000 fine and banned from hunting Arizona for 5 years.
Just curious, John

I don't know the amount of the fine but when I found my Gila on the Road in AZ, I did what Phobos did, sheperd it across the road to keep it from being hit by a car. There was no law there so I wasn't threatened by with fines. I simply didn't want it to get killed and the reason i didn't touch it was because i was thinking it was unlawful to do so. Thank you for all of your input. I will continue to get them out of the road but would never collect them out of the wild. As I said before, we don't want to screw up an endangered species any more than it is already screwed up.
