Hi Chris,
At no surprise to myself your source has misinformed you. For accuracy, I suggest cross examining any future information you get from him. Here is the information you are looking for, and trust me......it is correct this time.
Here are the following species of mambas (Dendroaspis sp.)
East African Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps)
Jameson's Mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni jamesoni)
Black-tailed Jameson's Mamba (Dendroaspis j. kaimosae)
Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis)
West African Green Mamba (Dendroaspis viridis)
D. angusticeps has been bred in the United States on many, many occasions. D. viridis has been bred in the United States on a handful of occasions. A very close associate of mine has some captive bred adults right now. D. polylepis has been bred on a few occasions in the US as well.
I have no records of any D. jamesoni ssp. US captive breedings; however, that doesn't mean it hasn't taken place.
