Hi all,
I am new to keeping venomous reptiles, and was wondering if anyone has any info on collecting venom for anti-venom use? How must it be collected/preserved? Who buys it? I am not thinking of doing it myself, just interested in it.

Matt,
Go to the front page of this website and click on the Speak Out section and view more. In there you will see a topic on venom extractions. My suggestion is to start there. There's some pretty good info for starters, then if you are still hungry for more info, contact any one of the people there that posted, particularly Jim Harrison. He's an authority in that area of the herpetoculture society. Hope this helps.
Take care,
Matt

not a good idea in whole you need a professional lab with stearal equipment and all the venom suppliers are filling the AV makers with all they need. so really what i'm saying is that at one time or another we all have wanted to do that but all in all there in just not a market for raw venom, then you have to think of the risks that come with milking snake
hope this helps

Please see this long thread on this forum:

This topic has been discussed to death...Bottom line...no market for "fly-by-night" venom labs.
Best,
Al

Thanks, guys
i wrote the post because I know of a guy who brags about keeping hots and swears he can make money selling the venom of his 1 puff adder. I remembered something I had seen about the guy ( was it Bill Haast?) who milked snakes for the venom and then preserved it for sale.He had a huge facility, lots of helpers, and only made a little $$. He had been bitten many, MANY times and was very lucky to live. This has led to research on why he is so healthy overall.....at the end of the program, it was revealed that this guy now INJECTS himself with tiny amounts of venom as a preventitive. Not me, thanks.
This paticular guy I know is the type that can do anything better, faster, or cooler than you, and I would like to educate him before the fool just starts milking and tries to sell the venom after the fact.
Thank you for the tips.

That question comes up once a month the person is a
dreamer no open market for venom exists there is no shortage so there is no need to have non pros selling
venom burst his bubble let him know his little puff adder wont make him a single buck.
but it will kill him with one slip as he trys to milk it.
