I totally agree with 23bms(?), I too would never tail anything. I have seen guys way too often, tail a snake well within strike range and all I can do is just sit there and cringe at the thought of how close they are to getting hammered. My tongs and hooks work just fine and I value my hands and all digits to allow myself to get that close to the heat. The tongs and hooks have no nerves, veins or tissue that could wind up blackened and fall off. Shoot, with the tongs, I've seen them nail the "gentle giant" ends and that's with a loose grip...let your hand be in the proximity of that. Alas, there will always be the guys who will tail a snake for better or worse, it will happen and one day they too WILL eventually see the heat end of the snake get too close for comfort. By all means be safe, use common sense and most important enjoy the slendor of our reptile friends.
Sorry, I didn't mean to take any of the light out of your trip, but just wanted to make sure that you come back from that trip with all your being in one piece and fruitful in your quest. Enjoy the south and the piggy's.
Best of luck,
Matt

Pigs are terrible at sitting on a hook, so just some FYI -- my favorite tool to handle Pigs with is a 24 inch pair of M1 tongs made by Midwest. Yes, I am friends with Dana, but if you purchase these tongs you'll see what I mean. The quality is incredible and the length and jaw width are just right. I use these particular tongs for most snakes under 2 feet.
