What is the best source of lighting for Copperheads? A daylight basking light, a nocturnal red light, or would they do better with no light at all, and supply them with a source of belly heat? Thanks

For all my snakes I use either a "heat rock" or an Infrared emitter for heat with desert snakes. This allows them to find the temperature that they want , not what you think they need. Please note that the smallest emitter is 60 watts, powerful enough to fry most snakes. Care must be taken that neither you or the snake touch it when powered!! VERY HOT!!
As for lighting I use a full spectrum light source (florecent)that is set to a timer that I can change with the seasons.
This what I find to work for me.
Good luck,
Al

Full-spectrum lighting is not as important for snakes as it is for lizards and chelonians. Snakes get most of their calcium from the digestion of whole prey items and thus, aren't as succeptible to the vitamin D3 losses that occur with lizards and chelonians. However, I do agree with providing full-spectrum lighting via flourescent bulbs supplemented with an under tank heating pad/hot rock.
