Hi, a couple of hours ago I was at local pet shop, which has a baby (2ft) Cobra. I'm not sure what species it is. At any rate, I was there to photograph it. The Cobra was in an aquarium within a cage, one guy opened the cage but I wanted noting to do with the aquarium being opened.
This 17 year old self proclaimed "pro" decided to piss the snake off, which he was really just scaring the hell out of it to try to make it spread it's hood. He put on a heavy red rubber glove and he was struck while grabbing it's tail, although the fangs were not long enough to penetrate the glove, the Cobra did spot some venom on the glove. Now, like a total moron this pro, rather than washing the venom off decided to shake it off with a nice long swing directly at me; 5ft away.
I'm not 100% certain if the venom landed on me, but it is possible and I am paranoid person, which leads me here... Does the venom remain toxic? Could a small amount cause me serious illness? How long does it take for the venom to take effect if soaked through the skin? I didn't have a chance to wash my exposed body parts, but did as soon as I could.(maybe 40minutes)
Pardon my ignorance, I'm just a little concerned considering it's a Cobra and I live in Pennsylvania and I'm pretty positive that no hospital would carry an antivenom for this snake.
What I do know is the Cobra is not a spitter.
I believe, but I'm not positive that is was a Monacle Cobra. Kind of a blackish-brown, tan throat, ummm that's about all I know, I'm not a snake person.
Thanks, and reply as quick as possible because I'm a bit concerned. I feel fine btw. I just don't know if it could be absorbed through the skin and have a delayed reaction.

You will be ok. When venom is exposed to the eyes, mucous membranes, or open cuts, then it should be harmful. Venom is dispersed throgh the blood stream. I'd have words with that little MF about his behavior. Behavior such as that warrants an ass whipping and a phone call to animal wildlife authorities.
Try not to worry. You'll be fine.

Thanks, I feel much better just knowing. I have no open wounds and I know nothing hit my eyes.
I did have words with him, but being a "pro" he assured me he knew what he was doing. Torturing a snake near death. The same pro told me he was struck by his Bush Viper (now in a Zoo), which had him in the hospital for a while. His index finger is now useless, and judging by his arrogance and ignorance I'm sure the Cobra will nail him or some innocent person sooner or later.
He has no respect for animals, though he proclaims his love for them. His sticks his bare hand into a 5 gallon tank to "stir" up the poor thing, perhaps he doesn't realize how fast they can strike.
The most disturbing part, besides the animal mistreatment, is that he influences a younger teenager to act in the same manner. They like to show off for people and have no respect or fear of these deadly animals. They have no antivenom, so if they get hit, they're screwed.
I am tempted to call someone, considering the store doesn't have a license to hold such animals. If you know who to call, give me a number and I will. Shit, I could probably have 3 shops shut down.
I could spend days writing of petshop horror stories, as could most everyone at this site. So I won't bother preaching to the choir.
Thanks again.
John

He's going to get someone hurt. Just call the police. I'm sure they will be quite attentive to your complaint. Someone could get hurt here.
It's an obligation....then knock the hell out of him.
