What is the best type of environment to provode for these snakes in order to breed them? I currently have 1 male and 1 female housed together in a 40 gallon wide aquarium with aspen substrate. Should I use sand? I have been feeding them once a week and sometimes twice with mice and small rat pups. They are always subjected to 80-90 degree temperatures. They do love the darkness. I noticed that is when they do most of their feeding on LIVE rodents. They have a very nice den that they burrow into during the day. Although there is not much literature on this facisinating snake I am still wondering if it is normal for them to burrow during the day time hours? These snakes get along perfectly together. Do you think it would be a mistake to introduce a 3rd snake, a female malayan, into the aquarium? Is there a way to see if the female is gravid? I let them do their own thing and allow them to live in harmony. The only time I move them is when its time to clean their enclosure, other than that I never handlw them. They are in perfect health. Any information or experiences you can share with me is GREATLY APPRECIATED! mataaman@yahoo.com

I would not use sand.
The main specific requirement for Malayan pitvipers is high ambient humidity, otherwise they have problems shedding thir skin. The fact that they bury themselves may have something to do with the need for moisture.
Cheers,
WW

Thank you very much WW, for your reply. Although shedding is no problem for my 2 pits. They do it pretty much on a regular basis. I am mainly wondering if burrowing underneath the rocks during the day is common. They seemed to have done that since I brought them home 3 years ago. Other than that they are very healthy snakes.
