Hi everyone. About a month and a half ago I got a wild caught Uromastyx from North Africa. This lizards had a significant amount of extremely small red ticks.I bathed the animal but it still has them and now my iguanas seem to have them. can anybody tell me a good solution for getting rid of theese critters ? I don`t want them spreading to my other herps. Thanks.

hi mate
yeh thats whats to be expected by wild caught animals never easy, anyway there are a few treatments , a safe but messy method of removing mites is to cover the animal with a film of olive oil, this smothers the mits but it won t get rid of mites in there juvinile forms. you might need assistance from a pro when doing it. pyrethroid mite sprays they have rapid kill actions, are nt expensive, low toxicity, do not accumalate in the enviroment. lizards that don t have a protective eye cap a drop of opthalmatic lubricant placed in the eye will keep it protected from these sprays. there are pyethyroid shampoos but if you use them be sure not to leave them in the eyes of mouth. there are mite strips that you can buy BUT the active indgredients of orphanophosfate is quit toxic alot of vets actually discourage there use because i know of many snakes that have died for being in contact for to long and died of orphanophosfate toxicity, use them carefully.
unfortunatly other treatments i know of are things like:
albendazole, piperazine. so it might need a trip to the vet unless you can buy anything from a shop where you live.
hope this helps you out ask your vet a bit about mites for more info.
shaun.

Give them a bath in cooking oil. You need to treat their cages too. Don't forget the eggs will hatch down the road and re-infest, so treat for about a month. There are a few items that are available on the market but I don't know how easy they are to get where you live. For example:

http://www.flyboynaturals.com/prozinguar.html
http://www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html
I used them both they work great.
Good luck
