You can own venomous in georgia. I have a high respect for the gaboon viper as well as all venomous and non venomous animals. I dont get snakes to just keep them as "pets". I get them to get a better understanding. I dont want my first encounter to be with a wild aggressive gaboon viper in Africa somewhere far away from medical help. I work my way up slowly. It was alot of non venomous for years. Then a copperhead. Then about 100 more copperheads. Then a timber/canebrake rattlesnake, Then a cottonmouth, then an eastern diamondback. I am satisfied with something as dangerous as an eastern diamondback, but Ive worked with this one day in and day out(And its highly aggressive) ive seen that I can handle them, house them and feed them etc. safely, so I think that Im ready for something else. I probably wont buy one. Im going to read up on them like ive been doing for years and make my decision when I finally see a cb baby. I know that I may come off as an immature teenager that is asking for trouble, but Im really not. I spend my whole day thinking about snakes, looking for snakes, reading about snakes, watching shows about snakes, caring for snakes, etc. I know that Im not above making a mistake, but who is? I wouldnt get this snake if I didnt think that I could absoloutly care for one safely.

BushViper, I respect your pasion because I also shaire it. I`m just advising you not to say things like: "I can take on a great white shark" because it`s the kind of stuff that makes people jum at you. I handled a gabby at a reptile expo here, run by a friend of mine. It wasn`t a huge animals but let me tell you they`re totaly unpredicatble and possible irritable. They`re capable of high speeds both in striking and moving(especialy the smaller animals). If you want one, buy one, that`s my advice, just don`t let the authoryties find out and don`t piss it off to often. I would get one only I don`t have a place from which to buy one and if I did it would cost around 600 euros so I`m sticking to cheeper ones for know. Best regards, Alex S.

Jeremy, I suggest that you check your sources again. It is legal to keep INDIGENOUS venomous in Georgia without a permit. That means Eastern Diamondbacks, Timber/Canebrake Rattlesnakes, Pigmy Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths, Copperheads and Coral Snakes. That is ALL.
Everything else is EXOTIC venomous and requires a $256 permit and proof of $40,000 liability insurance PER ANIMAL up to a cap of $500,000! It is vaguely possible that the figures are actually $50,000 per animal with a cap of $400,000. At the size of those figures I personally think it is moot.
It is also illegal in Georgia to keep any indigenous nonvenomous snake without a permit. This includes all phases/morphs etc of Corn Snake, Eastern King Snake, Black Kingsnake, Florida Kingsnake, etc etc.
All of this information is a matter of public record and is easy to check.
Should you decide to go ahead and go against the advice you receive here regarding the illegality of getting a Gaboon, that is up to you. However, do not come in here and post about it as I will delete all posts about illegal activity as I have done since I joined the SHHS 5 and 1/2 years ago. The GA DNR as well as several other states DNR/F&G departments regularly check our forums for illegal activity. The SHHS as a whole does not support illegal or irresponsible keeping.
Please be safe and legal.

Karl, you freakin' rule. I wish other forums and websites followed you guys by example, maybe we would have less problems arising in the hot community.

I've kept gaboon's for a number of years. Imported animals tend to be cranky and hissy, like a puff, LTC seem to be tame...SEEM, gaboons tend only to strike when the target is close enough to hit.

My friend said the same thing. He had the honor to work with a gaboon in Mississippi. I cant get one. I want to have one in the future. I'll just settle with buying an Eastern coral snake, and a Pigmy rattlesnake.

Pygmies and coral snakes are a much better bet than a Gaboon Viper. I have several Gaboons and they are all different in temperment and excitability. Dealing with your "highly agressive" Eastern DB IS good experience, no one here would deny that. The thing is, the agressive ones aren't the ones you should worry about. You know what they think of you and are always on guard. It's the passive venomous snakes that make me pause. None of my Gaboons are agressive and for the most part, they just like to sit there in the same spot for hours on end. That doesn't seem agressive to me but don't think for one second that I would ever let any part of my anatomy come close to one of those animals.
Jeremy, I think your youthfull bravado is a bit played out bro. Tone it down and stop the shark fighting. It's not good for your health.

dont do like I did and I use this experiance as a learning curve for me I live in Mississippi and there are no laws governing exotics and I had not been keeping venomous snakes long about a year and I felt that I was ready so I got a gaboon I found out soon that I was not ready and in the end the only result was I didnt know how to properly know keep the snake, zoo's and shows are misleading it looks simple then but its harder when the snake is actualy there, I thought I had every thing right caging, tools, food, and experiance, well so I thought, dont get your self in to deep you have your whole life ahead of you, plenty of time to slowly get a collection, I hope everything go's good for you.
good luck,
